Maybelline Queen! Evelyn Williams - Oh What Price Glory!

There was no one in the Maybelline family more invincible than Evelyn Williams...at least that's what she wanted us all to believe.

My grandmother Evelyn with my father William Preston Williams at Dundee Military School, Chicago, 1934 -1935

With the same voratious appetite Evelyn had for succeeding in all areas of her life, including playing the violin, mastering the stage as a ballerina and finally securing a position within the Maybelline family, she focused on her only child William Preston Williams Jr. (Bill.)

Evelyn wasn't your ordinary sweet homemaker, though she did love her son as ferociously as a mother Lion loves her cub, however her main objective was to instill a mindset for survival in the boy and that meant creating an indisputable bond between Bill and his uncle Tom Lyle Williams.

She succeeded, though not  without making herself unpopular with the rest of the Williams family.  Evelyn fought on the battlefield of life in her persuit to win at all costs and today I realize my remarkable grandmother, the original auntie Mame, was two generations ahead of her time.

A tiny 5' 2" powerhouse with boundless energy,   Machavellian mental machinations and the ability to outsmart the smartest of wild cats, she had one desire.  To place her clan at the top of the heap no matter what the price -and Evelyn paid the highest price of all... with her life!

Nana was a diva in every respect and not only expected but demanded I follow in her footsteps. I wonder if she'd be pleased today with the fact I've dedicated my life to her memory and the family she loved so much.

The healing process begins after Nana's terrible demise in Hot Springs Arkansas...1978

Evelyn Dorney, (my mother in law,)  my husband Gene Dorney, me and my Baby Georgia, my sister Billee and my dad Bill Williams with his Fiancee, Gloria Rosan, at Georgia's second birthday at Disneyland.

Life took on a new slant, three years after Nana's death, and our war-torn family began to heal.  Bill Williams wild years came to an end and he took his role, as head of the family, more seriously after his mother's mysterious death in Arkansas.  He was a grandfather now, a father and soon to be a married man once again.  The best years of our lives waited for us in the 1980's.

Known as "The Entertainer's Entertainer,"Country Western Star, Karen Wheeler remember's the day Miss Maybelline Perished

I received this comment from Country Western singer, Karen Wheeler recently and it actually brought me to tears.  She was booked to perform at my grandmother's Palace Dinner Theatre the day "Miss Maybelline" was mysteriously killed.  I would love to talk to Karen and hope she will see this and contact me.  The details of this tragedy are spelled out in The Maybelline Story and it would be my pleasure to send a signed copy of my book to her.

I was booked into the "Palace Dinner Theatre" March 2, 1978. I was supposed to follow Conway Twitty. There was a 3:00 rehearsal and during rehearsal they rushed in to tell us about the Maybelline Manor burning and Mrs. Williams was killed. I was suppose to stay at the Maybelline Manor but when they picked me up at the airport they diverted me to the Rosemont Hotel.

On the other side of Conway Twitty's article was an ad announcing Karen Wheeler playing at the Palace.  The paper came out March 2, 1978, hours before Miss Maybelline parished.

Miss Maybelline, Rest in Peace!!!

Remembering my grandmother, at her memorial, I spoke of her incredible life and what I'd learned from it.

The Chapel was filled with her family and friends.  Two pictures of Nana sat on a table.  She was wearing a black hat with red feathered plums and had one foot up on a chair, exuding all the moxie of a confidant move star.

The memorial was dramatic, and I gave the eulogy, wearing a 1950’s black Christian Dior dress, just like Nana wore, in her hay-day with Warren.

My memories of Nana, brought the crowd of loved ones to tears, as details of her amazing life made it impossible to believe she was gone.

After the service a line of Cadillac’s, Mercedes and Rolls Royce’s cruised up the hill overlooking the ocean.  It was surreal, as fifty people gathered at the fountain to watch my larger than life grandmother, be put in a
red little box.

But as we soon learned, not for long!!!

Maybelline Heiress Evelyn Williams becomes a Bride in her 70's.

My 73 almost 74 year old grandmother runs off and marries a man 12 years her junior in Nov, 1974.

The Bride and Groom married at the Balboa Bay Club against my father's will.
