Digi/Writing interview, " What inspired you to write The Maybelline Story"

            I Am A Writer Series – Writing Tips

Q&A With Sharrie Williams

Want to know what other writers think? Check out our I Am A Writer Series where we ask writers to share tips, experiences, and thoughts about what matters to them.

When did you first realize that you wanted to be a writer?

I kept a diary at fifteen and expanded to intensive journal keeping in my thirties. After my grandmother, Miss Maybelline’s, mysterious death, I knew I had to tell her story. That’s how my book The Maybelline Story was inspired.

Have you ever tried writing in a cafe? How did you find the experience?

When I was writing The Maybelline Story I’d sometimes go to Starbucks when I didn’t have internet where I was visiting. I found it better than a library. It was comfortable, and I liked the hum of people coming and going. If I needed to ask a question, I’d ask it out loud, and usually someone else working on their computer would come over and help me.

What was your favourite subject in school? Were you always a strong writer?

I was a drama major in high school and junior college. I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in psychology. Both subjects taught me to be a great story teller and, combined with my journaling, I progressively became a strong writer.

Do you imagine the world you’re going to write about before you write it? Or does it come to you through the story?

Being an Ira Progroff intensive journal keeping student for over thirty-five years, I have learned to tap into my inner world and develop stories I never dreamed of. It’s called automatic writing. I go into a meditation space and just let my characters tell me their stories. That’s how I wrote The Maybelline Story.

Do you get writer’s block? If so, what technique gets you writing again?

When I’m intensely writing or editing I get burned out after spending several hours in the deep space of my inner world, connecting with my characters, and have to rest. I do yoga every day and must sleep nine hours or more. It’s like turning to ice and having to thaw out. But I love it.

Sharrie Williams
I am so very excited and honored to have my second guest blogger (the first was my daughter Krysten)! Sharrie Williams is the author of The Maybelline Story. She is the heir to the Maybelline legacy, is Tom Lyle William's great-niece and the granddaughter of Evelyn Boecher Williams. I am so excited to have the beautiful and wonderful Sharrie on my blog this week and I know you will enjoy every word below - I surely did!

As a blogger yourself, what advice can you give others and myself about the blogging world?

I find it incredible how a blog grows organically just by showing up at the computer everyday and posting good material.  Three years ago I was excited to receive 66 hits my first month.  Now I can't believe I have over 35,000 hits a month.   Of course adding Twitter followers has been a big boost and Facebook expanded my online presence as well.

Like Mabel in the book that burnt off her eyelashes on a hot stove, can you share some of your makeup secrets?

After I finish putting on my eye shadow I dab the tiniest bit of eye cream on my lids. This is an old Hollywood Movie Star secret I learned from my grandmother.  Another favorite trick of mine is, once I have my face make up and powder on, I buff it with a terrycloth washrag so it doesn't look thick and dull.  I also blot the oil during the day with rice paper or sometimes even a piece of a toilet seat cover in a public restroom.  Try it you'll be amazed.

What is your must have Maybelline product?

I still use Great Lash mascara. The number one mascara in the world and I like Maybelline mineral Power make-up. (It looks great after being buffed.)

Bette Davis and Leslie Ann Down with Hollywood Borderline Producer, David Van Houten

We ran across this photo in the Borderline Hollywood archive from September 1978 of David Van Houten meeting Bette Davis.

The great Bette Davis stopped by the 29th floor Publicity Office of Paramount Pictures in New York City with a bottle of Scotch, to just thank us for helping her promote Death on the Nile, which was released theatrically September 29, 1978. What an amazing and thoughtful person she was.

Van Houten's mother, who's name was also Bette, happened to be in New York that day and ran over from her hotel, The Essex House, to meet her as well.

Bette Davis interview on the Dick Cavett Show, November 18, 1971

Dr. David Van Houten with actress Leslie Anne Down.

 He remembers her as Georgina, in the English television series from 1975, UP STAIRS, DOWN STAIRS...."Such an amazing television series from that period"  he said, "and she was amazing in it.   She's still an iconic beauty today."

The changing styles of young women was captured accurately in the brilliant 1970′s TV period drama – Upstairs Downstairs, where the young Georgina, wonderfully portrayed by Lesley-Anne Down, evolved from war nurse to frivolous flapper.

The Maybelline Company operated “beneath the radar”

9.  END NOTES AND FILE MATERIALS
 By Harris A. Neil Jr.

This closing section contains miscellaneous materials from my files that relate to the previous recollections. They are in more or less chronological order, unless I missed a date here or there.

All of this material covers events beginning with the Plough merger, with nothing prior. I submit that this is because the company operated “beneath the radar” before the merger, keeping a low profile. This was a shadow of T. L.’s character; just like him, the company didn't bring attention to itself.

The material following is not captioned since most of it stands by itself; however, here are a few comments, in sequence to the sheets included:  The first four sheets announce the merger, followed by sheets that relate to that event;

There are two sheets that reflect Plough’s issuance of a “Qualified Stock Option” to certain key personnel of Maybelline. Very shortly after its issuance in early 1968, the stock effectively split 2-for-1. It’s all academic, because knowing the group receiving the option I don’t think anybody survived to exercise any of it, or at most only the first annual increment;

Then there’s a note from the First National Bank of Chicago from early 1969. It contained the second installment of T. L.’s gift (Alas, I must have lost the first announcement from mid-1968.);

Two copies of letters Rags Ragland wrote to me follow. Even though they’re over five years apart, they appear chronologically, because I have no other material from the intervening years;

The obituary for Abe Plough follows, source and date unknown. Doing the math from his life story, it should have been in 1984;

Finally, there are two articles covering Schering-Plough’s intent to sell Maybelline.

Though there are no documents in the file, Mayelline was sold to a investment group after Schering-Plough.
This was another step leading to the eventual home that Maybelline would find with the L’Oreal people, where I hope they live happily ever after!

Today Schering-Plough is known as MERCK.

Stay tuned for the actual documents to be posted on The Maybelline Blog.

Maybelline Art Deco ads transform from black and white into eye-popping color during the 1930s

                  Vertical ad in Photoplay magazine 1935

                  Full page black and white ad in 1936

       Same image used on first carded merchandise in 1936

During the 1930s Depression. Maybelline mascara was no longer sold through the classifieds in magazines, it was now sold in dime stores, produced in smaller boxes and dropped from 75 cents to 10 cents.  Profits soared and were put right back into advertising.  This full page, glossy color ad from 1937 is a perfect example of Maybelline's transformation from black and white to color.

Maybelline was the first to develop carded merchandise.
