Grease Premiere in London 1978 with John Trivolta and David Van Houten. A new tell all book that reads faster than Greased Lighting

David Van Houten Psy.D and I have been friends for over 40 years. He is a main character in my 1,000 page manuscript, optioned by producer, Marie D. Jones for a TV series. David is writing a memoir about living in New York during the tumultuous 70's and 80's including his tenure with Paramount Pictures.

Excerpt from the Grease opening in London

We were in one car with John in a limousine. Olivia Newton John, who joined us for the tour, was in the car behind. As we got closer to Lester Square the crowds were enormous, thousands and thousands of people there to see the man I’m setting next to! In those days there were two important differences (negatives). 1. windows on Limos weren’t blacked out, so you could see into the car and second, security was very Lazy Fare. In that, we only had a couple of guards drive in with John, however, the tons of police we have come to expect at these things and for people who are much less apt to create the frenzy John created, just didn’t exist.

If you Google Grease premiere London, you can see what it was like. The real drama occurred with people, who we were trying to not run over as we inched to the entrance, began to recognize John in the car and reacted, well you can only imagine. They began jumping on the car and beating on the windows. We inside were terrified, plus the driver, who was a fellow who was not particularly trained, panicked. We were trapped.

To be honest, I don’t remember what we did then. Though, photos and video cameras showing John and I shoving our way through the crowd, alone. We realized we were on our own since no one had pictured how getting from the car to the theater front was to really happen. My feeling was that no one else was going to help us, so I’d better earn my salary and grab John and just get him in. I’m sure after time, movie stars learn to anticipate this, or rather, their handlers do, so the kind of ciaos we experienced that night doesn’t happen, because, it’s actually dangerous.

Sharrie Williams with her friend, David (Hook) Van Houten, long time filmmaker and Producer of Borderline Hollywood. David Van Houten's roots in Perris date back to the 1800's, when Perris was home to the regions gold rush...the Hook family still own the Santa Rosa Gold Mine.  David is deeply revered by the people in Perris and produced the movie, “D Street: A 45 minute Documentary” that captures a century’s worth of Perris history, culture, diversity, development and recreational activities and opportunities. He has also donated much of his family's heirlooms and personal history to the Perris Historical Museum.

I was delighted to meet Riverside County supervisor Maroin Ashley at the my 100 years of Maybelline event and was very excited to hear that in late 2015 a new railway stop will be stationed in Perris.  It will extend the existing 91 Line, which runs from Los Angeles Union Station to Fullerton, Corona and Riverside.

According to Perris
Mayor Daryl Busch, who also sits on the commission, there will be a new train station in downtown Perris.  I will be the first to get my Passport to Perris and catch the train when it makes it's first stop at the Perris train station....  Finally after 100 years since Perris was part of Gold fever, it will be back on the map.  Watch out people, because property values are going to skyrocket in the next ten years if things go the way they are for the "Little Train That Could."

The creators of the Perris Centennial Exhibit at the Southern California Fair said they wanted to design a display that would link the City's past with present while connecting with people through a series of photographs, documents and mementos from Perris' first 100 years.

Bette Davis and Leslie Ann Down with Hollywood Borderline Producer, David Van Houten

We ran across this photo in the Borderline Hollywood archive from September 1978 of David Van Houten meeting Bette Davis.

The great Bette Davis stopped by the 29th floor Publicity Office of Paramount Pictures in New York City with a bottle of Scotch, to just thank us for helping her promote Death on the Nile, which was released theatrically September 29, 1978. What an amazing and thoughtful person she was.

Van Houten's mother, who's name was also Bette, happened to be in New York that day and ran over from her hotel, The Essex House, to meet her as well.

Dr. David Van Houten with actress Leslie Anne Down.

He remembers her as Georgina, in the English television series from 1975, UP STAIRS, DOWN STAIRS...."Such an amazing television series from that period"  he said, "and she was amazing in it.   She's still an iconic beauty today."

The changing styles of young women was captured accurately in the brilliant 1970′s TV period drama – Upstairs Downstairs, where the young Georgina, wonderfully portrayed by Lesley-Anne Down, evolved from war nurse to frivolous flapper.

Tribute to my childhood idol, Hollywood Legend Ester Williams - dead at 91

Ester Williams was second in box offices sales in the 1940's. However, while Grable sang and danced her way to the top of box office success...the pool and wartime pinup pictures of Williams in bathing suits, made her a Star.  The upswing in home swimming pools during the the 1950 was said to be because of Hollywood's Queen of the Water Ballet.

My parents nicknamed me Ester Williams, when out of the blue, I slid off my float and swam to the edge of the pool.  I was 3 years old and everyone made a big deal out of it. I was born with natural talent for swimming, everyone said.  As I grew older, I hoped to become a water ballet star at MGM, where my grandfather, Andy Mac Donald was head of the prop and construction department for over 50 years.

"Ester Williams, Get out of the pool NOW!" became my parents mantra, because I'd stay in in the water until my fingers looked like prunes.

Still a Mermaid in 1968, right after the Maybelline Company sold. My dream was to live by the ocean.  It came true when we moved to Newport Beach, that year

As a little girl, I imagined being a Bride someday, dressed in a white bathing suit with a veil pinned to my sleeked back hair. I pictured my Groom and I diving to the bottom of the pool, saying a quick "I Do" and coming up a married couple.  All my guests dressed in bathing suits, would joyously jump in and congratulate us. What could be more fun, I thought!!!

I did get married, but not in the pool, of course.  Here I am with my best friend David Van Houten, in 1977, eating tuna sandwiches after a swim across the bay on Lido Isle, in Newport Beach, California.  You can hardly tell I'm pregnant, but, my baby girl, was born just one week after this picture was taken. She too grew up to be a water baby just like me.

1987 at my father's home in Palm Springs California.  Me, my brother Preston, my daughter Georgia and my dad, Bill Williams. After a day of swimming in his giant, Casa De Guillermo pool.

So as a born Mermaid myself, I'm very sad to hear of my swimming Idol, Ester Williams, passing on June 6th, at 91, in her sleep.  I imagine she's probably orchestrating a beautiful water ballet right now..... and when I join her, I hope she will cast me in one of her heavenly productions
.

REST IN PEACE ESTER, YOU WILL BE MISSED
