Stylish version of a 1934 Packard Convertible, redesigned and renamed "Clenet"

It's no wonder Maybelline founder Tom Lyle Williams nephew, Bill Williams, loved his 1977 Clenet Series 1, # 13 out of 250.

The nostalgic features reminded him of his childhood in the 1930's, growing up surrounded by his uncle's beautiful custom-designed, Packard's.

Tom Lyle's 1940 Packard Victoria, at the Villa Valentino, where Bill spent his youth.  All of Tom Lyle's Packard's were custom made. One was famous for having gold plated chrome.

Bill with his uncle Tom Lyle Williams, 1934.

The 1934 Packard offered a line of semi-custom cars that were usually built in numbers of at least five. The 11th series cars were distinguished from all other models by their raked back, “vee” windshields, extra long hoods, extra wide cowls, and their extra tall radiators.
These were unique to only this model year.

11 year old Bill Williams, was with his uncle, Tom Lyle, at the 1934 Chicago's World Fair, when this car was shown.  Tom Lyle ordered the car and had it delivered to the Maybelline Building, where the key's were handed to him.  A picture of the delivery is documented in Packard's private journals.

Imagine how this super long, super ornate automobile, must have looked to a young boy.  So it's no wonder, that when Alain Clenet, produced his series 1 convertible in 1977, Bill was one of the first to purchase it for, $80,000 - with custom etched windows and his initials etched in the door.

My 1977 Series 1, Clenet, # 13 out of 250 is back on the road again in Newport Beach

It's been over a year since my sister Donna and I took our dad, Bill Williams, Clenet # 13, out for a spin around Newport Beach.

Bill grew up surrounded by the excitement and glamour of his uncle, Tom Lyle Williams, Villa Valentino, in the Hollywood Hills.

and often drove with him in his custom 1940 Packard Victoria.   When Bill was able to afford any car he wanted, he chose the Clenet, because of the extra long hood and
the glamour he once knew as a boy with his Unk Ile.

When Alain Clenet designed and sold his version of a 1930's convertible roadster that would rival the Rolls Royce in 1977, My dad was one of the first buyers and we still own # 13... 8 years after his death.  Come take a ride with us in Bill's Clenet and visit his beautiful condo on Lido,
 in Newport Beach.

A replica of Rudolph Valentino's statue once poised at the pool of the Villa Valentino... "Aspiration" greets you at the door, before entering a world were time stands still.

Cousins, Cooper Aston and Jeff Welles, spend the day with Donna and Sharrie Williams, as they revisit Bill Williams world and get the feeling of what it was like living the ultimate Newport Beach lifestyle..

Maybelline Heir Bill Williams, AMERICAN CLASSIC, 1977 Clenet, Series 1, number 13 out of 250,

GATSBY AUTOMOBILE click on.

My father, Bill Williams, chose his Series 1 Clenet,
because it gave him the feeling he had driving in his
uncle Tom Lyle Willimas, 1934 Packard Victoria.

To a little kid growing up in Chicago,
his uncles, 1934 Vee Windshield Dietrich Packard
was a fantasy car.

When Bill turned 16, his Tom Lyle Williams, had this 1940 Packard Victoria, custom made and Bill remembered the thrill of his uncle teaching him how to drive in it. The style, glamour and flash of the Packard was reborn in the Clenet.

53 year old Bill Williams represented the ideal
Clenet owner living out the Gatsby Dream.

Clenet Series I, Number 13/250

In the early 1970’s Alain Clenet had
a dream to design and build one of the most elegant coach-built automobiles ever produced. He formed a company in Santa Barbara, California with a very small, elite group of craftsmen that helped make his dream a reality.

This is a 1977 Series 1 Clenet, Number 13 of 250. Originally purchased by Bill Williams, who recently passed, this car remains a part of his family’s estate.

This particular Clenet is very rare because it was the last car built on a Lincoln Continental running gear and chassis. After 1977 the running gear on the first series cars changed to a Mercury Cougar chassis with a smaller motor, transmission, and suspension. This particular Clenet has the 400 cubic inch engine with the C6 transmission, large breaks and suspension. There
were many Series I cars that were purchased by celebrities and used in filming movies and TV
 shows.

The car has been in storage for the
past 7 years and recently went through a preservation
by Steve Kouracos. Kouracos was one of the original craftsmen at Clenet Coachworks. He set up and managed the body and paint division. The car is 100% original, including the 35 year old lacquer paint job.
We hope you enjoy viewing this piece of automotive history as much as we love showing and displaying it to others.

-The Williams Family

Specs:
400 cubic inch 2v v-8 engine
Select shift automatic transmission C6
Four-wheel power disc breaks
2.75 rear axle ratio

Never before seen photos of Maybelline Heir, Bill Williams, Palm Springs Estate, Casa de Guillermo

Marie Dressler
My father, Bill Williams, beautiful Estate Casa de Guillermo, was built for Silent Film Star Marie Dressler in 1929. It was a showplace where stars like Jean Harlow and others, stayed during Palm Springs Hollywood Hay Day, in the 1930's. My father bought the 2 acre property in 1973 and planted 50 Palm Trees, fruit trees and lush green foliage to create a spectacular Garden of Eden Sanctuary.  The property was hailed as Palm Springs most Beautiful Estate and featured on Palm Springs map of the city.  The film Goodbye Norma Jean was filmed there in 1975, followed by several TV shows. George Hamilton, Kirk Douglas, Liberace and Elvis Presley were some of the neighbors living close by in Old Las Palmas. The home was also used for Political fundraisers in the 1970s.  By 1980 after my father married his 3rd wife, Gloria Rosan, the property was closed to the public so our family might enjoy 30 wonderful years making memories.  Sadly, because of my father's failing health, his estate was sold in 2004.  He passed away 18 months later.  The new owners didn't appreciate the historical value of the property and had it destroyed to rebuild a sprawling modern estate. Here is what the grounds looked like as you entered through the iron gates.

2002, Gloria meets guests at the gate with little
Maybelline in her arms.

As you drove through the gates, the smells of honey suckle and orange blossoms lifted you out of the city, while heavenly colors transported you back to 1930s Hollywood.

Mexican pavers added more color, drama and glamour while the overwhelming beauty captivated your soul.

A classic car enthusiast, Bill Williams, collected and stored 12 of his automobiles in two separate garages on the grounds.  This is one reason he bought the estate...

for the garage space.

The 1968 TR6, 69 Rolls Royce, 1961 Limo, and
 1915 Model-T truck.

Gloria's car parked at the doorway of
Casa de Guillermo.  A nice feature for arriving guests,
who never got caught in the rain while packing or unpacking their car.

There were 3 gates on the estate.  One leading in,
one leadng out and one receiving guests who parked outside on the street.
From the garage, leading to the entrance of the home.

Little parking alcoves allowed guests to park,
without interfering with the beauty of the landscape.

My dad bought his Clenet, # 13 for Gloria's Birthday in 1977 and after his death it has remained in our family for the last 7 years.  We had it cosmetically restored to it's original glory 2 years ago and have enjoyed showing it a the La Quinta and Santa Barbara Concours.

The car is now up for sale and can be seen at

Stay tuned this week as I walk you around Bill Williams Stunning Casa de Guillermo.
