THE ULTRA GATSBY IMAGE ... MAYBELLINE HEIR, BILL WILLIAMS' "CLENET"... 1977 SERIES 1 number 13

I received this email March 11th

Dear Sharrie Williams,

My name is Brandon Dickson and I am a film student at California State University, Northridge. Currently, a group of us are in the preproduction stages of a documentary on Clenet automobiles as our senior thesis. We heard about your family's history with the #13 car and saw a video of you speaking about it and its' involvement in your life. We are really interested in speaking with you and perhaps interviewing you as a subject for our project. Please contact us as we look forward to working with you.

Sincerely,

Brandon Dickson (Executive Producer)
Jennifer Fernandes (Director) --

I agreed to meet with Brandon and Jennifer with their film crew four days later on March 15th, and we shot clips for this mini-documentary.  The thesis being, "Why do Clenet owners still have such passion for their car 35 years later."  Here is the result of our collaboration.

After graduation, this Summer, Brandon and Jennifer plan to expand their film into a full length Documentary and enter in Film Festivals around the Country.

Producers...

Brandon Dickson's childhood fascination with cameras and movies has blossomed into college with honors and a career in film and TV production. He began producing shorts and YouTube videos in 7th grade and hasn't stopped since. His dedication to high production values and interesting subject matter is evident in his work as he continues to produce documentaries, narratives, and photography for all occasions.

Jennifer Fernandes is a self-motivated and hardworking television production student who strives to outdo her expectations for every project she becomes involved in. After spending a year and a half studying biology she realized that her true passion lies in the creative world of television and film. As she eagerly progresses through her courses and gains valuable knowledge, her passion grows. Jennifer continues to work hard with determination towards advancing her career in the professional world ahead.

THE GREAT GATSBY (1974): Robert Redford was and still is the ultimate best Gatsby in my book.  The class, the sophistication, the looks and the style. This new Gatsby is nothing more than a carnival ride with a beautiful background behind it.

IMAGE - The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. ....

Step into my world and cruise with me.
Packard's, Sexy Body Parts - Bumpers, Fenders, Headlights and Hood, equaled more than the sum of its parts, it equaled an emotional appeal that spelled image.

When it came to branding, Tom Lyle Williams Considered the image of .....

            The Maybelline  company.....

including everything from advertising styles, stationery, company colours and even the car he chose to be seen in.  Because Image and style said it all.

Photographs by Chuck Williams aka BB1, founder and owner of REEEEEL CONVERTIBLES..... and deemed by Mike Love, as BB1.....The # 1 Beach Boy FAN.

THANK YOU TO STEVE SNYDER OF VAULT CLASSIC CARS FOR MAKING THIS PHOTO SHOOT POSSIBLE....

VINTAGE MAYBELLINE HISTORY DETECTIVES on the hunt for "What ever happened to TL's 1940 Packard Victoria.

Just like real life History Detectives, we set out to discover the truth about, what happened to the Packard Victoria, after it left our great uncle's hands in 1952.

Meeting the present day owner's, Bill and Jo Ellen Snyder and their son, Steve Snyder of VAULTCARS.....Chuck Williams aka BB1, Sharrie and Donna Williams, set out on a REEEEEL, Treasure Hunt..... that made all the pieces of the puzzle, at last, come together for us.
Bill Snyder, now in his 90's has been an avid Duisenberg and Packard collector for over 60 years and still owns his mother's, perfectly preserved, 1946 Packard.
Jo Ellen Snyder, is quite a collector of original moving art, herself, and has been a jewelry designer, for as long as her husband has been collecting
Duisburg's and Packard's.
The Snyder's home is a virtual museum of American memorabilia.....I asked Bill if he still collects....."no," he said, in a serious tone,  "we ran out of room"....  I looked around and there really wasn't a vacant spot to display one more item.....We all sat the the table and Steve brought out a giant file of records, for the the 1940 Packard Victoria...I remarked at how thick it was...and he looked straight at me and said..."This is only the tip of the iceberg."  That's a real historian
After studying all the records and pictures of the car, Steve Snyder and my cousin Chuck Williams aka BB1, owner of  REEEEEL CONVERTIBLES, proceeded to capture gorgeous photo's of the car.  Chuck was especially drawn to the Horse Head, hood ornament, claiming he had bookends that belonged to his grandfather, Noel J. Williams that were similar.
Chuck believes the Horse Head, held special meaning for Tom Lyle and his brother Noel J....perhaps pertaining to Horsepower, and Maybelline outrunning the competition.
Here are the Horse Head bookends that Chuck inherited from his grandfather Noel James Williams, Vice President of the Maybelline Company from 1915 to 1951.
Chuck's reflection in the Packard's door, as he shoots a picture of my sister Donna and I pretending to cruise down Hollywood Blvd.  We wanted to recreate the feeling, of what it was like to drive in Old Hollywood, luxury, from the 1940's.
Steve Snyder captures Donna in the drivers seat, while I ride shotgun.  We have special feelings for this car, because our dad, Bill Williams, was just a kid when he and his uncle Tom Lyle, drove it to the homes of Hollywood's biggest stars, to collect their signatures on Maybelline Contracts.
So here I am ready to interview the Snyder's for my mini- documentary, about their 1940 Packard Victoria..... that once belonged to our great uncle, Tom Lyle Williams, founder and owner of the Maybelline Company.

Stay tuned this weekend, as I wrap up, Packard Victoria, week, on the Vintage Maybelline Docu-Blog..... featuring..... The Snyder's and The Williams and their history with this amazing American Classic.

Scroll down to view my interview, with Packard Historian, Steve Snyder.

My presentation at the Pacific Book Club, in Newport Beach, last night, was a smashing success.  I will be posting pictures tomorrow.

My Cousin Chuck Williams, aka, BB1 and I will be visiting Bill and Steve Snyder of VAULTCARS, next week to view, Tom Lyle's 1940 Packard, be sure to check in to see pictures and a video.

Tom Lyle's flashy little yellow 1926 Kissel, what a head turner.

          Tom Lyle Williams 1926 Kissel,

Here is a picture of Tom Lyle's sister, Mabel Williams.....Maybelline's namesake.....with her new husband, Chet Hewes, on their wedding day, in 1926. The Newlywed's are posing next to Tom Lyle's new yellow 1926 Kissel.  I believe TL eventually, gave this car to his partner Emery Shaver, who in turn, gave it to Tom Lyle Jr. in 1932, when TL Jr, was a student and captain of the football team, at Duke University.

If only Tom Lyle, had kept his beautiful cars..... there might be a Maybelline car collection today.

IMAGINE DRIVING IN SUCH STYLE IN 1923

After the 1916 Paige Detroit, Tom Lyle, bought this exquisite looking automobile, I'm guessing, between.  I've been told, it's not a Packard, because it doesn't have the ox-yoke radiator design.  Any suggestions?

Tom Lyle standing on the left, his partner Emery Shaver sitting on the ground. Not sure who the lady is next to TL, but his sister Eva, (in black,) and her husband  Ches Haines, are on the right.  The fashion dates this picture between 1921 and 1925.

The fashion dates this picture around 1925.  Tom Lyle's brother Noel J. is on the far right, while their sister, Eva, is the second lady on the left.  The automobile looks custom made, like all of TL's cars.  Any suggestions from my car guy readers, please email me at maybellinebook@gmail.com.

Check in tomorrow for another one of Tom Lyle Williams, outstanding classic automobiles.

                  To celebrate Tom Lyle Williams,
           116 Birthday.....Jan 19, 1896.....

My cousin, Chuck Williams, aka, BBI, and I met with Steve Snyder, of Vault Cars, at Barrett Jackson's Classic Car Auction, in Scottsdale Arizona....We discussed our great uncle's, 1940 Packard Victoria.... which has been in Steve's, father, Bill Snyder's, collection for over 40 years.

Tom Lyle Williams,

What came out of that meeting, was a decision to meet on March 18, to view the Packard Victoria and make a video, for my blog. Check this video of Chuck and Sharrie toasting Tom Lyle's 116th Birthday.

Bill Williams 68 Shelby Cobra, GT 500 and 1971 Eldorado Convertible.

47, just divorced, living in Newport Beach California - Image was everything -  when it came to his cars.
An avid reader of Playboy, this Shelby Cobra ad, struck the perfect image for a soon to be eligible bachelor. In the Spring of 1970, after separating from my mother, Pauline, my father, Bill Williams, walked straight into Theodore Robins of Costa Mesa Ca, and bought the Shelby Cobra GT 500 convertible, for $4,000 cash, right off the showroom floor.  It had 900 miles on it, because, according to the salesman, it used as a promotional car, driven by Carroll Shelby himself.  Bill had to have it, and pulled out of the parking lot and into his new life.
Mrs. Judge Kearney, Chuck, aka, BB1, his mother, Jean Williams.  Josephine answering the door at the Bernard Maybeck estate in Montecito California.

Wanting to show off his new sports car, Bill and Linda, (his soon to be second wife,) along with my future husband, Gene Dorney and I, attended my cousin Chuck Williams, aka, BB1's, 21 Birthday Bash, and received the shock of our lives when.....
The parking attendant rolled the Shelby on a joyride around the Montecito,'s curvy roads.  Luckily the roll bar saved his life, but the car was crashed.  My dad had the Shelby, in the shop for 6 months and than, gave it to me for my 24th Birthday.
In the mean time, a new image had to be created for Captain Bill of the Balboa Bay Club!  This ad appealed to my father's vanity, with it's long hood - screaming.....
                             I'm 48 and I have arrived!!!!!

My dad began collecting classic cars, after moving to Palm Springs - where he could buy an estate with several garages.
