Maybelline "It-Girl" Clara Bow passed away 47 years ago on September 27th 1965

She was only 60 years old and was best remembered as the roaring twenties leading sex symbol.
In honor of her I have taken this Maybelline Clara Bow illustration from the 1920's and placed it on this adorable vintage mini-make-up bag - now available on my blog at http://www.maybellinebook.com/p/make-up-bags.html

At the time Clara Bow was staring in Silent Films, Maybelline's little red box looked like this,

and came in liquid form as well.

Here is what the original Maybelline box looks like on my mini-make-up bag.
These little bags are great organizers for quickly locating many lost items in your purse.
And this is the sexy "It-Girl" illustration, featured in a Maybelline advertisement in the 1920's.
Before Maybelline... the eyes were the one feature on the
face completely and positively overlooked.  Image that!!!

Mabel with her brother-in-law, Chester Arthur Haines, at his wedding to her sister Eva, in 1924.

Mabel may have put  the "M" in Maybelline, but, she had no interest in being just another "It Girl," or "Vamp."  She was a traditional, 32 year old, Southern Lady, waiting for her man to come along.

Unbeknownst to her, Chester Randolph Hewes, was living in Chicago and working at Montgomery Wards, in the automotive, advertising department.

At the time Chester, was involved with an English girl he'd met in England, while in the Navy, during
WW l.  He had said goodbye to her and her family after his stint was over and headed back to the US, got a job and was busy working.  When all of a sudden, Connie, her mother and several grown brothers showed up on his doorstep.

He told her he did not want to marry her, but being a gentleman, arranged for an apartment for the family and  jobs for her brothers.  After awhile she realized Chester, just wasn't that into her, so, packed up her family and sadly, headed back to England.

Mabel met Chester, through his sister Bonnie when he came to pick up Bonnie at a bridal shower given at the home of Chester's then girlfriend.  Mabel was also a guest and after Chester met her, he told a friend, Mabel was the girl he was going to marry.

Story by Chet and Mabel's daughter, Shirley Hughes, who passed away recently at 95 years if age.

Between 1922 and 1929, Clara Bow's vitality and sexiness defined the liberated woman of the 1920s. Clara Bow (1906-1965) became one of Hollywood's brightest lights during this time. Click highlighted words to see and read more about Clara Bow.

'The "It" Girl'.  "It" symbolized the tremendous progress women were making in society.

Maybelline in 1922 came out with their own "It Girl" with an illustration of Clara Bow and coining the slogan "Eyes that Charm!  This ad influenced liberated young girls to take up the challenge of the 1920's and recreate the image of Women by wearing eye-makeup on the street.

No three sisters were more influenced by the "It Factor" then my grandmother Evelyn and her sisters Verona and Bunny.

My great aunt Bunny at 18 in 1921 made a statement with this picture as she blatantly flaunted her acceptance of wearing makeup in broad daylight after bobbing her hair, raising the hem of her dress and rolling up her stockings.

Clara Bow brought an excitement to the screen and girls went bonkers taking on the spirit of the Roaring 20's.  Evelyn and her sisters were no exception and jumped on the Band Wagon right from the start.

The three sisters, Evelyn, Verona and Bunny in short black silk dresses and fully made up eyes were the torch bearers of their generation.  City girls, born in Chicago, educated as well as talented musicians and dancers they turned heads as they walked down the street or cruised in their daddy's flashy convertible.  The Boecher Girls were definitely influenced by Clara Bow and considered themselves having "It" as well!
