My 1977 Series 1, Clenet, # 13 out of 250 is back on the road again in Newport Beach

It's been over a year since my sister Donna and I took our dad, Bill Williams, Clenet # 13, out for a spin around Newport Beach.

Bill grew up surrounded by the excitement and glamour of his uncle, Tom Lyle Williams, Villa Valentino, in the Hollywood Hills.

and often drove with him in his custom 1940 Packard Victoria.   When Bill was able to afford any car he wanted, he chose the Clenet, because of the extra long hood and
the glamour he once knew as a boy with his Unk Ile.

When Alain Clenet designed and sold his version of a 1930's convertible roadster that would rival the Rolls Royce in 1977, My dad was one of the first buyers and we still own # 13... 8 years after his death.  Come take a ride with us in Bill's Clenet and visit his beautiful condo on Lido,
 in Newport Beach.

A replica of Rudolph Valentino's statue once poised at the pool of the Villa Valentino... "Aspiration" greets you at the door, before entering a world were time stands still.

Cousins, Cooper Aston and Jeff Welles, spend the day with Donna and Sharrie Williams, as they revisit Bill Williams world and get the feeling of what it was like living the ultimate Newport Beach lifestyle..

Take a ride with Sharrie and Donna Williams and their cousins, Jeff Welles and Cooper Aston.

Tom Lyle Williams 1940 Packard Victoria HERE WE COME!!!

My cousin, Chuck Williams, aka, BB1, and my sister Donna Williams and I are on our way to see our great uncle Tom Lyle Williams, 1940 Packard Victoria!!!

The three of us love vintage automobiles, especially our great uncle Tom Lyle Williams classic custom Packard's.

Tom Lyle's 1940 Packard Victoria, is owned by Bill Snyder.  We will meet with Bill and his son, Steve Snyder, owner of VAULT CARS, to see the Packard, for the first time since Tom Lyle sold it over 60 years ago.

Stay tuned for pictures and video's tomorrow.

Clenet, the most elegant coach-built automobile ever produced.

The party's over, and Bill Williams classic # 13, Clenet, goes back home until next year!

click on video.

Sharrie Williams and Steve Kouracos, tuck Bill's Clenet back in it's spot, in the garage, until next year.

This particular Clenet is very rare because it was the last car built on a Lincoln Continental running gear and chassis.  After 1977 the running gear on the first series cars changed to a Mercury Cougar chassis with a smaller motor, transmission and suspension.  This particular Clenet has the 400 cubic inch engine with the C6 transmission, large breaks and suspension.  There were many Series 1 cars that were purchased by celebrities and used in filming movies and TV Shows.

After the Series 1 was completed, Clenet then designed and produced the Series ll - a four passenger - and went into production on his Series lll, The ASHA.

This car has 26,000 original miles and has been in storage for the past 6 years.  Recently it went through a preservation by Steve Kouracos.  Kouracos was one of the original craftsmen at Clenet Coachworks.  He set up and managed the body and paint division.  The car is 100% original, including the 35 year old lacquer paint job.  We hope you enjoy viewing this piece
of automotive history as much as we love showing it.

Specs:
400 cubic inch 2v v-8 engine
Select shift automatic transmission C6
Four-wheel power disc brakes
2.75 rear axle ratio

Automobile designer Alain Clenet's version of a 1934 Packard Convertible.

It's no wonder Maybelline founder Tom Lyle Williams nephew, Bill Williams, loved his 1977 Clenet Series 1, # 13 out of 250.

The nostalgic features reminded him of his childhood in the 1930's, growing up surrounded by his uncle's beautiful custom-designed, Packard's.

Tom Lyle's 1940 Packard Victoria, at the Villa Valentino, where Bill spent his youth.  All of Tom Lyle's Packard's were custom made. One was famous for having gold plated chrome.

Bill with his uncle Tom Lyle Williams, 1934.

The 1934 Packard offered a line of semi-custom cars that were usually built in numbers of at least five. The 11th series cars were distinguished from all other models by their raked back, “vee” windshields, extra long hoods, extra wide cowls, and their extra tall radiators.
These were unique to only this model year.

11 year old Bill Williams, was with his uncle, Tom Lyle, at the 1934 Chicago's World Fair, when this car was shown.  Tom Lyle ordered the car and had it delivered to the Maybelline Building, where the key's were handed to him.  A picture of the delivery is documented in Packard's private journals.

Imagine how this super long, super ornate automobile, must have looked to a young boy.  So it's no wonder, that when Alain Clenet, produced his series 1 convertible in 1977, Bill was one of the first to purchase it for, $80,000 - with custom etched windows and his initials etched in the door.

Bill's Clenet will be shown at the Santa Barbara Concours D' Elegance, next weekend.  Hope so see some of you there.
Alain Clenet will also be in attendance.

Watch for Sharrie next week on The Morning Scramble, making, Mrs. Noel J. Williams, "auntie Frances"
 to die for, Chocolate Extravaganza.

Show will be posted on the Maybelline Blog as well.
