Maybelline Kid had Fun, Fun, Fun till Daddy takes the 911 Porsche away.

My Brother,  William Preston Williams lll, last Hurrah with the Porsche 911E, at  Casa Guillermo, in 1976.  Like father, like son!

Preston Williams in the middle, with his best friends, on his 16th Birthday.

Born to be CAR GUYS: Concluded:.
Story by Preston Williams.

Tom was pretty much my best friend, and I trusted his good sense, (well as much as a teenager could judge or have.)  He loved cars and was a good, safe driver, so when he said, "hey Press, I'd love to drive that little Porsche, and take it to the limit, but this time during the day, no hair pin turns," I thought, why not.

It was a Saturday and again Dad was out of town, so I agreed, only if I could drive his, quick little 289.  I knew it would never beat the 911E, but it was a fun car, so after he agreed we went back to the Tram road - but this time all the way to the base station, because he wanted to drive the windy road all the way down to Palm Canyon.

The Porsche was so fast, you could zip through the turns and then fly down the straight ways, and because it had great breaking ability, and the quick speedomatic transmission - shifting was awesome, just a fun car.

Tom drove to the base station (quickly!!) and than headed back down, and again since it was summer in the desert, the Tram was pretty much dead.

Tom began the trip down the mountain, taking the turns at about 60, shifting through the turns and hitting about 75 through the straight ways, than, down shifting through the turns.  The car handled great!  However, about half way down the mountain, the road turns into big long S turn, and that's where he got up to 3rd gear, cursing about 80 through the long S turns.

The last three miles straighten out, so he tapped the brake and down shifted into 2nd, than punched it!   unfortunately, there was a little dirt on the road, and  caught a little fishtail.  Tom quickly shifted into 3rd and luckily, it straightened out and we were gone!

120, 130 +, just coming out of that fishtail was  exhilarating, and the speed just laid you back in the seat as he hit 4th at 140, 150 +.  At 5th gear the guage was pegged and just flying, until the last mile, when the motor stalled, but we still had momentum, so kept going.

Tom pumped the brakes and we hit the curve onto Palm Canyon about 70 miles an hour, and she just hugged the turn, as we cruised into the North end gas station about a 1⁄4 mile down the road.

I said to Tom,  "Dud what’s up? Every time you drive this car it dies?"

This time we had gas and the battery was charged, but we had two problems, the Porsche wouldn't start, and it was stuck in gear.

“What the F—k are we going to do?" I said,  "even if we get it home, my Dad will know that it's broken."

So not able to get it home , I had no choice but to call my Dads friend Carl, who owns a gas station or two, and would know what to do, Talking about biting the bullet!!

"Hello, Carl?, uh, this is Preston, you know Bill's son."

"Ya, ya , sure," he said, " Hey Press what’s up?"

"Carl, I have a problem," I said,  "and Dad's out of town, and I could use some help?"

"Okay, what type of help," he said,

"uh, car help,"  I said,

"Did you run out of gas?"

"Well no,"  I said,  "I, um, took the Porsche out and it won’t start?

"I’m sorry Press," he said in dismay,  "you what?  you took your Dad's car for a ride,"  he laughed,  "okay bud, where are you?  I'll come down and see what I can do.

"OK thank you Carl," I said, finally exhaling.

So I gave him the directions, and hung up.

Tom freaks out saying.  "Man you can not, tell your old man I was driving!!! - Not only will he be pissed at me, he'll call my Dad - and he'll kick my ass, and take my car for a month or more.   This is so not cool!

"Ya think?"  I said,"  I'm gonna get my ass kicked if
my Dad knows you were driving.   I may as well kiss my ass goodbye, well, it was fun while it lasted."

We looked over the car to see if we could figure it out? Tom says it could be vapor locked, being so hot outside, and maybe that locks up the transmission somehow,

"Well that would be cool," I said, "if it all fixes itself."

"Listen Tom," I said,  "I know Carl’s a cool guy, maybe he won't tell my Dad about this."

"When does your Dad get home," Tom said.

"Who knows, he said Monday?

"That's good," Tom said,  "then we have two days, to figure this out."

"yeah, well, these days, he always tells me later, and comes home sooner, hoping to catch me in the act?"  I said.

"Great!!  Were F**k*d."

About that time, a big white pickup truck pulls up. It's Carl,  "Hey boys, out for a joy ride?,"

"Yeah, you know just cruising." I said, laying low.

"This car?"  Carl says,  "Sure, Cruising," he laughs, as he inspects the car.  "Press, all I can do is have it flatbeded back to the house, and Press you know; I will have to tell your Dad, you boy's will have to face the music for this one!"

"Yes I know.

So Carl had the car brought back to the house, and he said, "Press I would recommend that you tell your Dad first, okay kid."

"Yup, thanks Carl."

"Alright Press. I will wait a week."

I had a lump in my throat the size of a grapefruit, when telling my Father what happened. He was so pissed, especially when the repair would cost $2,500.00, he took my car away for a month, and from that point forward when he went out of town, he'd either lock me out of the house and make me stay with friend, or he'd have the neighbors check in on me all of the time.   He also took the car keys with him, when he'd go - and that summer, he went to Europe for a month, and locked me out of the house.

However, the good news was, Dad, made arrangements for me to stay at my Girlfriend's house, but for a teenager that was more of a blessing then punishment!

I guess the good old times were over and it was time for me to grow up. At least for today.

The Last Hurrah!!

Growing up fast, driving fast cars and being the son of a Maybelline heir in the 1970's, was quite the hayday!

My sister Donna with Preston  in 1977

1966, my brother Preston turned 16. He lived with our dad, Bill Williams, at his estate in Palm Springs. Our dad, owned many exotic cars.  Any kid would be tempted to sneak the keys, invite a friend and take a spin through the winding streets of  Old Los Palmas. Since our handsome, man about town, dad, spent plenty of time, "doing his own thing," so to speak, my brother was hard pressed to keep his hands of daddy's cars.  Here is one of my favorite stories, written by Preston.

Dads 1971 Jag XKE V12, was quite fast.  I remember doing one of those joy rides, unbeknownst to Dad, who was at the condo in Newport Beach.  Tom and I had just driven out of the gates of Casa de Guillermo, turned right on to Patencio Road and then pulled onto the dirt shoulder side of the road, to test it's pony's.  I threw it into low drive and punched it!  It starting spinning it's wheels throwing dirt and all of a sudden grabbed a rock or something and jerked to the left.  The car did a complete 360 circle.  The long front end swung around like the hand of a clock and we both saw the wall next to us coming closer and closer as the front end swung around. Thank God the car missed it by the hair of my chiney chin chin, but needless to say that pretty much ended our fun for the day, as we both we freaked out after that!  But, tomorrow would come and I am sure we got into something else because I knew where the keys to all the cars were so, when dad left.....it was always an adventure!

Lou Gehrig's disease
Also called: ALS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
Man dropping dishes due to progressive muscle weakness.
A nervous system disease that weakens muscles and impacts physical function.

Sadly, my brother Preston, has recently been diagnosed with ALS disease. So far it has affected his voice and he has some weakness in his arms and legs. He fell because of a lazy foot and broke 4 toes a few days ago. ALS, is a hideous disease with no answer as to why it attacks.  If any of you know people with ALS, post on my blog. I would love some information and encouragement.

Top 5 Cars that are Perfect for Modification

My Brother Preston with the 1969 Porsche 911E
Here is one of the special cars my father owned.  It had been modified for street use, because the motor was made for a race car owned by his cousin Bill Stroh.  Below I've posted an article about 5 cars that can me modified to add horsepower. Thought you'd enjoy the ride.

All of the pistons and rings were forged by hand out of aluminum, as well as many other parts to be extra light weight, everything about this motor was designed for ultimate performance and many races. this was no ordinary car"

When my father bought the car it had to be tuned down a bit, to make it safe for the road.  The car had a specialized breaking system to support the high speeds.  The suspension was modified as well all to make it fast and safe.  Best of all it looked original.

Top 5 Cars that are Perfect for Modification

Not so long ago, 0-60 times in the sub 6-second region were surely the domain of supercars that came with a hyper-costly price tag. These days, you can get a sub $30k sedan that will do that. It’s likely this kind of performance is not quite enough for you though, so we’ve put together a list that comprises the 10 best everyday automobiles that are easy to modify and by doing so, they can be metamorphosed into dream cars.

These cars are popular and they are popular for very good reason. They’re all solid performers and they witness a huge amount of aftermarket support, too. And there’s another good thing – even if speed isn’t so much your thing, there are tons of dress-up items in the shops for them as well.

5. Dodge’s Caliber SRT-4

It may not be quite the heart flutterer that its predecessor was, but with its bargain-basement cost and its 300 horsepower, turbocharged engine, it’s certainly a worthy contender on this list. This represents a Gen-Y muscle car, and comes with an obscenely powerful engine, a budget chassis, and a 0-60 time which only a rocket from an RPG can match. Modification: The Caliber SRT-4 most certainly could use a limited slip differential. The 300 horsepower engine whacks all its power to the front wheels, and these front wheels fully determine in which direction the car will go.

4. Subaru WRX

There’s really nothing not to like about a turbocharged sedan that’s rally-bred and comes with a 0-60 time that’s sub 6-seconds. Yet, the car has room for five.

Although. when it first hit the scene back in 2000, the face was not at all attractive, but very rapidly it became established as the rally driver’s go-to-ride, which of course appeals to the lads who love to go fast. Modification: The 2009 version of the WRX has 41 horsepower more than its otherwise identical predecessor. With the older ’08 model, a first step is to tune the ROM, together with the turbo-back exhaust. Those with the newer and slightly more powerful WRX, might wish to stiffen the chassis with a solid set of coilovers.

3. Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart

The Lancer Evolution, Mitsubishis’ latest offering, is bigger in power, size, capability, refinement, and also on price. It would be nice to save on a bit of cash and get the Evo IX MR, but the problem is the honing damage can be rather frightening. Thus, it’s wise to plump with the latest Lancer Ralliart.

It’s got the same drivetrain as the Evo X minus a differential, same engine, minus 54 horsepower, and it’s got paddle-shift dual clutch transmission, but here, it’s minus the S-Sport mode. On the racetrack, the Evo X would greatly outperform the Ralliart, but on the street, both vehicles feel very alike.

The Ralliart is a super car at a super price, and an intelligent Ralliart owner can happily invest in the lighter Evo X parts to make their alterations. Modification: It’s a very balanced car, is the Lancer Ralliart, and perhaps it’s unwise to carry out any modification that may impact this balance. However, tuners such as GST and AMS are enjoying horsepower gains of over 30 horsepower with nothing other than a ROM tune. Thus, it’s sensible to begin there.

2. Volkswagen GTi

Still one of the very best, it’s the original hot hatch. The sport-tuned Golf has experienced an extremely loyal following for the past number of decades, and the auto’s popularity is as strong now as it ever was. The GTi in North America is not quite the newest, but it still has the 200 horsepower, 2.0-liter turbocharged four.  Modification: The current GTi, just like its predecessors, responds particularly positively to an ECU tune. It’s a simplistic and cheap modification, while the dynamo charts demonstrate that the upgrade provides huge horsepower as well as torque gains through the rev band.

1. Honda Civic Si

With the new Civic Si’s 197 horsepower, 2.0-liter engine, it’s the most energetic Civic to have been sold in the U.S. Further, it comes with one of the top 6-speed manual transmissions around, a very nicely balanced chassis, and an LSD option. Modification: It’s going to be a costly business to get any more power out of the naturally-aspirated K20.
So, get rid of the stock headlights and instead swap them for HID Kits and LED headlights from someplace like XenonHIDs.com. Next, get some stickier tires and you’ll very likely love the look and the performance.
