Maybelline founder Tom Lyle Williams

GLORIA SWANSON - Sunset Boulevard - Maybelline.

Paramount Star, Gloria Swanson, rocketed to stardom and was one of the most sought-after actresses in Hollywood.
She appeared in Lash-Brow-Ine and Maybelline Ads during the Silent Film Era.

Gloria Swanson, endorsed Lash-Brow-Ine and Maybelline in the 1920's - acting as a role model for young women wary of appearing vain in public... just as women got the vote and Prohibition was enacted.

During her heyday, audiences went to her films not only for her performances, but also to see her wardrobe. Frequently ornamented with beads, jewels, peacock and ostrich feathers, haute couture of the day or extravagant period pieces, one would hardly suspect that she was barely five feet (1.52 m) tall. Her fashion, hair styles, and jewels were copied around the world. She was the screen's first clothes horse and was becoming one of the most famous and photographed women in the world.

Best rememberd as Norma Desmond, in Sunset Boulevard - the greatest film ever made, about old Hollywood - Gloria Swanson, stands as an icon.

Many of the lines from the film have become pop-culture mainstays, and are often used to describe Swanson herself; among them: "The Greatest Star of them all," "I am big; it's the pictures that got small," "We didn't need dialogue, we had faces."

Maybelline, Vampires, werewolves and monsters.

Known for having "The most beautiful eyes in Hollywood,"  Lenore Aubert,  appeared in this beautiful color, glossy, autographed Maybelline ad, in 1948, as well as popular Vampire movies.

Lenore Aubert, was born in present-day Slovenia, at the time still connected to the Austro-Hungarian Empire (her French name was pure Hollywood hokum, designed to make her background more exotic - though she did live for some time in Paris). Eleanore Maria Leisner was the daughter of an Austrian general and spent her formative years in Vienna.

, Lenore Aubert,  played many a mysterious foreigner or femme fatale:  she was at her slinky best in
the 1948 horror comedy,  Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948).

Who's On First?  Abbott and Costello greatest skit.

Vampire, Werewolves and monsters have come a long way since 1948.  Special effects have made them blockbusters, with the highest paid Stars ever.  Though, Lenore Aubert was a glamorous, mysterious, actress in her day, she pales in the shadow of Breaking Dawn's Kristen Stewart.  Check the trailer for Breaking Dawn and see what a difference 63 years of cinema can make!

  PS, I loved the movie!!!

Yankee Doodle Dandy.
Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942) is one of Hollywood's greatest, grandest and slickest musicals. The nostalgic, shamelessly-patriotic, entertaining film also supported the war effort as it paid tribute in its mostly fictional story to a popular Irish/American entertainer and the grand American gentleman of the theatre in the early 20th century.

Maybelline's Wonder Woman, Linda Carter.

Provocative and Sexy Maybelline's
 Super Hero!!!

best known for being Miss World USA and as the star of the 1970s television series, The New Original Wonder Woman (1975–77) and The New Adventures of Wonder Woman (1977-79).

Maybelline's Wonder Woman, 1984.

Wonder Woman is a warrior Princess of the Amazons (based on the Amazons of Greek mythology) and was created by Marston, an American, as a "distinctly feminist role model whose mission was to bring the Amazon ideals of love, peace, and sexual equality to a world torn by the hatred of men."[2] Known in her homeland as Diana of Themyscira, her powers include superhuman strength, flight ( even though the original Wonder Woman did not have this ability), super-speed, super-stamina, and super-agility. She is highly proficient in hand-to-hand combat and in the art of tactical warfare. She also possesses an animal-like cunning and a natural rapport with animals, which has in the past been presented as an actual ability to communicate with the animal kingdom. She uses her Lasso of Truth, which forces those bound by it to tell the truth, a pair of indestructible bracelets, a tiara which serves as a projectile, and, in some stories, an invisible airplane.

Maybelline Heir - RACE CAR DRIVER - Jerry Westhouse and the Indy 500 .

Like Grandfather like Grandson!  Jerry Westhouse loves anything with wheels.

Eva and Ches Haines, with their first grandchild, Jerry Westhouse, in the 1970's.  Ches continued his love for beautiful automobiles until the end of his life and passed on his legacy to his grandson, Jerry.  After the Maybelline company sold in 1967, Ches bought matching Rolls Royce's for Eva and himself, with vanity plates that said, Eva and Ches.  Now that's true love!!

My cousin, Jerry Westhouse racing dirt bikes, in the 1970's, aspired to be a race car driver!!

                           Jerry Westhouse today.

Jerry Westhouse, still has the racing spirit, and parlayed it into a career, after meeting Paul Newman, the actor and racing enthusiast, in the 1970's.  My cousin Jerry has worked for Paul Newman and Newman/Haas racing for years, and is one of the team players, who helps build Indie 500 race cars.

Maybelline Super Heroes and Alphas.

No wonder I've always been attracted to dynamic, Charismatic men.  I grew up surrounded by Super Heroes and Alphas!!!!

Sharrie Williams with her great uncle, Ches Haines, 1965.

Between my own Grandfather, Preston Williams, (whom I never met, but know he was a major-Alpha,)
my father Bill, a Super-Alpha,
my great-uncle Tom Lyle, well, I rest my case on him, what more can I say about Super Heroes!!!
My great uncle Noel, a Super Hero, among
Super Heroes, and my two great uncle's
Chet Hewes and Ches Haines, both over the top, Sparkling-Super-Hero-Alphas, it was hard to accept anything less than perfection....

These men set the bar so high, nobody could ever really live up to them.  So bitter-sweet as it was, being surrounded by such dynamic, charismatic giants, the only thing I could do, was tell their story, bring them back to life and hope my readers might feel their magic too.  May they inspire you to never give up on your dreams.

We all have the Super Hero, Alpha-gene, in us, if we just believe!!!!

Happy Thanksgiving to all my followers in America, and thank you to the 95 countries around the world, who check into the Maybelline Blog everyday.  I hope getting to know my family, touches your lives and gives you the will, to make your dreams a reality. Happy Holidays one and all.

Don't forget to listen to my Super Hero-Alpha, great uncles, Tom Lyle and Ches Haines, recording a vintage Maybelline commercial in 1947.
