Maybelline founder Tom Lyle Williams

Happy 120th Birthday to my Great uncle and Maybelline Founder Tom Lyle Williams

Unk Ile as he was known by his family, will forever be known as the Greatest!

Tom Lyle, during the late 1930's and 1940's, lived on North State Street in Chicago. Know as a swanky part of the gold coast. He also owned the Villa Valentino in the Hollywood Hills in California.  He and his partner, Emery Shaver,  traveled back and forth between the Maybelline Company in Chicago and California, where they concentrated on advertising the Maybelline Brand, with Hollywood's biggest Movie Stars.

Here is the building he lived in while in Chicago. It is a masterpiece of Art Deco design and influenced the remodel  at the Villa Valentino in 1938.

Take a virtual reality tour, of this Greta Garbo gorgeous, remodeled building and imagine what it must have been like to live there.

A couple of units in the famed Fisher Studio Houses have hit the market this year, and this week one more has gone up for grabs. Designed by architects Andrew Rebori and Edgar Miller and built in 1936, the landmark art moderne building located in the Gold Coast surprisingly (or not surprisingly) contains some of the neighborhood's most affordable residences. Back in the day, the building was one of the snazziest in all of the city, however, today, the units' spiraling staircases, curved walls and glass block windows can make for difficult living and thus can be had for a bargain. This particular one bedroom, one bathroom is seeking only $259,000.

In the mid-1930s, Frank J. Fisher, a Marshall Field’s executive, commissioned the architect Andrew Rebori to design a residential property that would also generate some income. Rebori recruited the muralist and craftsman Edgar Miller to help detail the spaces with stained glass and other finishes.

Completed in 1937, the building—known originally as the Fisher Studio Houses and situated at 1209 North State Parkway—is an Art Moderne landmark whose street face is a streamlined hatbox of painted brick and glass blocks. Beyond the front gate, 12 duplex apartments overlook a slender courtyard; Fisher lived in the three-story home at the rear.

Martin Luther King Day and Maybelline in the 1960s

Maybelline was the first Cosmetic Company to feature a Black Model in 1959, Je'Taun Taylor.

In 1964, Great Lash Mascara was born and featured a beautiful young Black Model, who spoke to the growing liberated female market.  The genius in this Ad was connecting Civil Rights with Women's Rights.

Martin Luther King Jr. was the driving force behind the  the March on Washington, which helped bring about the Civil Rights Act of 1964. King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 and is remembered each year on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a U.S. federal holiday since 1986.

Maybelline's Hollywood Special Effects. "Before and After Imagery." in Print and early in TV Commercials

Armed with market savvy, an eye for beauty and a penchant for perfection, Tom Lyle continued to experiment boldly, introducing what would become one of the most familiar and effective ploys in advertising: “before and after” imagery.

This captured the imagination of women everywhere, creating a need that he filled by placing striking cosmetic displays in dime and drug stores across America.

Soon the name Maybelline came to represent more than just mascara—it meant beauty, sex appeal and self-confidence, indispensable tools for every woman’s success, however she defined it.

Bathtub Options and Styles Here are two of my custom tubs

When it comes to choosing the right bathtub for your home, it isn't as easy. There are so many beautiful styles and options available in magazines, showrooms, catalogs and on line,  that you might feel overwhelmed. Be sure to do research and know exactly what kind of statement you want to make before you start the process. It will cut out a lot of legwork.

I choose this  beautiful Jacuzzi tub, while designing my new
home, after my original home burned down in the 1993       Laguna Beach Firestorm.  It's elegant, feminine and sleek. Just what I needed after so much soot and ash after the fire.

This glitz and glamour Jacuzzi tub, belonged in my father's over the top, Art Deco master bath. Unlike me, his bathroom screamed, "look at me aren't I gorgeous." He loved making a statement that's for sure and his home reflected his personality.

Though entirely different, we both wanted to make an architectural statement that complement our style and personality. Most bathtubs are a bit more modest, but like these beautiful tubs, they will reflect you and your home.

If you are remodeling your bathroom and are not sure of the kind of tub to chose from. take a look at the options and styles I have outlined here for you.

Bathtub Options and Styles

These days, bathtubs are created so as to make some kind of bold statement within your bathroom. There are copious styles and types, so how do you select the right one for your requirements?

Leave well behind the idea of investing in an unattractive bathtub that serves to do little other than hide behind the shower curtain. Nowadays, bathtubs can – should - be elegant, pretty, and streamlined. From a soaker tub to a whirlpool system, today’s bathtub options and styles should act as a centerpiece within your bathroom.

Ideas and Inspiration for a Beautifully Luxurious Bathtub

The bathtub style that you ultimately choose will depend on your personal style preference as well as the available budget. Manufacturers of bathtubs produce many different styles and looks, and no doubt some of those you will find match to your taste perfectly, while fitting into your budget with relative ease.

The first step in the process of selection is to have a good look through a wide array of bathtub options online and/ or in design books. That will help you to determine which style suits your own preferences.

First, give thought to the primary use of your bathtub. Perhaps it’s going to serve the role of providing lengthy and relaxing soaks and time to yourself. Or, at the other end of the spectrum, it may be used more for the kids or maybe even for washing your pets.

Whatever the need, the bathtub should serve your lifestyle very well. And do keep in mind the size as well as the requirements for installation. The tub should always fit into the available space so that it looks right.

If you have something of a penchant for the vintage look, go for a freestanding clawfoot tub. These are not only beautiful in their own right, but also work well to save on space. They serve as a bold feature within the bathroom.

You can also select the feet design as a way to reflect upon your own personal style. Some of these tubs feature a heightened back as a way to support the head and neck to enhance the experience of an ultra-long lie in the bathtub.

A whirlpool tub is best at providing a form of massage to select areas of the body, such as the neck or the back. A water jet system comes as standard with the majority of whirlpool baths. Prior to making an investment, do be sure to check that each jet has the capacity to adjusted for speed. And do note that these type of jets are a little noisy when operated, and they will require a regular cleaning operation to keep them functioning properly.

If you have a preference for a relatively simple tub without any accompanying fuss or noise from jets, the soaking tub is designed as a way to provide for a simplistic, relaxing escape from the pressures of life.

Some of these tubs come together with armrests which are molded into the tub’s sides. By virtue of the smooth surface, you might consider one that has a slip-resistant floor.

There is a variation on this type, and that is the Japanese soaker tub. This is traditionally manufactured from wood and is deeper but also shorter than what is considered as the typical American-style tub.

Increasing in popularity is the walk-in tub, given that they are very easy to use and they provide extra safety features. The walk-in tub has doors that afford easy access, and they can also include many different features such as handrails, adjustable jets, slip-proof textures, and sometimes also a seating facility.

If space is at a premium, you might wish to consider a corner type bathtub. These have been specially designed so they can be installed into curved or angular spaces within the bathroom. On the other hand, this does not necessitate that they must be small. Frequently, a corner tub is positioned beneath a window, in which case, you can enjoy the natural lighting and views of the exterior while investing time in the bathtub.

A further space-saving alternative is the tub/ shower combo. The benefit of this type of two-in-one unit is that any limitations on space are made the most of, while simultaneously, bathers are afforded both options to choose from. These are excellent in guest or children’s bathrooms.

What is Estate Tax and how does it Impact Me?

my step mother Gloria, cousin Chuck Williams, Me, Dad, Bill Williams, my sister's Billee and Donna

This picture was taken in 2002, four years before my dad fell, hit his head and died after two brain surgery's to reduce the pressure on his brain. While in intensive care the surgeon told the family he was bleeding in the center of his brain. He lived for a week unconscious before dying.  I'll never forget the phone call from my brother Preston, telling me "Dad's gone."

My dad at 51, and me during the filming of Goodbye Norma Jean in 1974. He was in his prime and he had a Living Trust.

It's bad enough going thorough the trauma of losing a parent, but having to deal with his estate, has been a 10 year nightmare. It still isn't settled after years of fighting a lawsuit and the economic downturn.  The year he died, 2006, the Death Tax was around $2,000,000. meaning anything over that was taxed 55%. Today if a person dies and leaves an estate under $5,430,000 there is no Death Tax.

My Dad in his late 60s, still robust and productive. He had a Living Trust.

If my Dad hadn't had a living trust and a good Tax Attorney and Accountant the nightmare after his death, would have been unbearable.  If you are considering a Living Trust do it now.  I have one and have had it for over 10 years. I wouldn't want anyone to ever face Probate. I think you might be interested in seeing how an Estate Tax would impact your family today.

What is Estate Tax and how does it Impact Me?

All forms of property, irrespective the format of ownership, that an individual owns at the time of their death is subject to federal estate tax. This tax is then payable through your estate. Normally, it will be paid by the decedent’s estate before the distribution of properties to the estate’s beneficiaries. Estate taxes are due, barring an extension, within a period of nine months of the individual’s death.

Exclusions on Estate Tax

Though the majority of the decedent’s assets will be included within the gross estate, occasionally there are exclusions. If the property is left outright to a spouse, then the federal tax liability is nil. It is a scenario referred to as marital deduction.

Should the decedent leave property to a charity that is tax-exempt, there will be no tax.

The Payment of Estate Taxes

Most Americans will not be subjected to federal estate taxes. As a matter of fact, it’s a tax that only impacts the wealthiest of Americans in most (but not all) states.  For a death that has occurred during 2015, the exemption on federal tax has been set at $5,430,000, per person.  If you exceed that amount, then a 40 percent tax levy is applied.

How to make a Calculation and File

The calculation of federal estate tax is potentially a complex matter. As such, it is thoroughly advisable to utilize the services of an estate tax attorney or other tax professional to receive help. An attorney who works in the practice of estate planning will be able to help you through the process, keep you updated as to any new laws, and also complete all the filing matters for you.

Nevertheless, if you are not quite ready to engage the services of an attorney just yet, and you merely wish to gain some concept as to the amount you could owe, you may utilize an estate tax calculator online. These can afford a reasonably good idea as to how much you will owe.

To use an online calculator, you will require as much information as you can garner with respect to cash and retirement accounts, investment accounts, vested stock options, life insurance proceeds, your home’s value, vehicles, together with any other assets. You will also need to know about your liabilities, unused exemptions of federal estate tax, charitable bequests, and taxable gifts.

You may wish to file on your own, in which case, you should use IRS Form 706. During the preparation of the return, do remember that you must file for an estate’s gross value rather than net value over and above the estate tax amount of exemption.

The return is due within nine months of death. Should you require more time, it is possible to pay an estimated tax prior to the due date, after which, you must file for an extension of six months. If you need help with filing, read through the IRS’s Publication 950.

Estate Taxes for the State

There may be no federal estate tax owed by an estate, but there are 15 states together with the District of Columbia that do levy their own taxes, and an individual does not have to be super wealthy to have to pay.

Currently, as of 2015, the following states are included: Rhode Island, New Jersey, Maryland, Maine, Minnesota, Massachusetts, Oregon, New York, Washington, Vermont, Delaware, Connecticut Tennessee, and Hawaii.

When will an Estate be Subjected to Federal Estate Tax?

With the death of an individual, an estate will become a taxable entity. Prior to the calculation of the tax, your real property, gross estate of money, and any other assets whereby you had some form of interest at the time of death, minus marital and charitable deductions, in addition to administration expenses of the estate, together with other acceptable deductions, will be tallied by the IRS to assess your net taxable estate.

If the taxable estate is to exceed the decedent’s exemption, federal tax is then payable. In 2015, the amount of exemption is $5.43 million. However, if you are married, your spouse has a separate exemption entitlement of a further $5.43 million.

The IRS closely scrutinizes the assets that are included in the estate as well as the worth of each item. This can and frequently does become the source of frustration between an estate and the IRS.

If your family owe estate taxes, use the services of a recommended tax lawyer in Rochester.

Meet Maybelline an Abyssinian ground hornbill on display at the Albuquerque Zoo

Maybelline will remain at he Zoo while teams examine the genetics of birds for pairing.

The Albuquerque Zoo said Maybelline originally came from the Omaha Zoo and thought the name was about the eyelashes since it was named by the gal staff. If it isn't the eyelashes maybe it's the eye shadow....Or maybe it's Maybelline??

The birds, native to Africa, imprint on humans and Maybelline recently greeted the Omaha zookeeper she hadn’t seen in a decade with bill slaps
