Maybelline founder Tom Lyle Williams

Goodreads Reviews the Maybelline Story

Not only do we know Maybelline as a major American cosmetics company, but Maybelline was actually the name of the founder's sister. Tom Lyle Williams was the actual founder of Maybelline and through his business acumen and entrepreneurial talent, came up with a product women are still using 100 years later. It was through his family, especially his sister-in-law Evelyn, herself a glamorous and fashionable woman of her times, that Maybelline became a national presence in the cosmetics market.

Tom Williams saw his sister Maybel attempt to darken her eyelashes with a dangerous mixture of coal ash and water. Women throughout history have always tried to enhance their facial features and Tom saw an opportunity to help his sister and make a few dollars. As it turned out, he was correct. He did both. The story also included American history, women's suffrage, the beginnings of Hollywood and attitudes towards homosexuality. The story had all the elements of a blockbuster story.

The author Sharrie Williams, who is the founder's grandniece, gives us her impressions about her family members such as her grandmother Evelyn. While Evelyn plays an important role in the success of the company, she is a self-centered woman, lousy mother and ultimately pays a steep price for her "ambition". I highly recommend this novel.

I absolutely loved this non-fiction read. A fascinating family - sad and amazing at the same time. Very good writing - I felt like I was reading a novel.

Very interesting story about the Maybelline dynasty. Tom Lyle Williams was a self made entrepreneur at a young age. He was and remained always interested in making money for his extended family. Because family was so important to him, he provided for all in his family. He also warned family members to be careful of frivolous spending and investments. Unfortunately some family members were careless and trusted some very obvious deceitful and conniving characters. It was an amazing legacy.

I had never heard of the Maybelline story before, so I was excited to read this book. I'm so glad I did because I absolutely loved it! With the interesting lives of all the characters involved I found the book hard to put down. I was actually disappointed when it came to an end.

Ladies in Woodland Hills, CA, can't put the Maybelline Story down!

Lauri's first mistake was bringing a book for her hairdresser, now everything came to a stop.

She tried to pay for her hair, and the ladies at the desk couldn't but the book down to take her money.

Even at the Farmers Market, she had to know what happened next while trying to fill her bag with organic fruit.

Three hours in her cabana by the pool, she kept reading, barely able to take a phone call as they came in.

Finally she and a friend, late for the theatre  had to grab one last paragraph before running out the door.

It's not surprising that 105 countries have checked into the Maybelline Blog, the nostalgia, the vintage pictures and Maybelline ads bring back memories of the way it used to be in America when life was a little slower and the world was wide open for young entrepreneurs to make their dreams a reality.

In honor of the Heroes in the Maybelline Family.

This is what Chicago looked like when my grandfather William Preston Williams joined the Navy in 1917.  He was just 18 years old with visions of being a War Hero.  Like so many boy's from the Lost Generation he imagined the war would quickly end and he'd return unscathed by the ravages of battle - only to be greatly disillusioned with a broken spirit.

This is what was going on in the Maybelline Family at the same time.  Tom Lyle introduced Maybelline to the public as Silentilm became popular and Silent Film Stars were seen on screen with heavily made up eyes.

Theda Bara "THE VAMP" - 1917.  This is what was going on in Hollywood when WW1 broke out.  Women began to be conscious of the their eyes and buy Maybelline.  An interesting fact -  Maybelline was sent in an unmarked package insuring the buyer her privacy since Maybelline was so frowned upon at the time.

1917 Maybelline became available through mail order.

Scene from the Silent Film WINGS.  This is what Preston was heading into.  He was a rear gunner on one of those Flying Sticks in the sky.

My grandfather, Preston Williams, with his parents Susan and TJ.  His mother was grief stricken after already losing her first son, Pearl to TB and the thought of losing another son to War was too much for her.  TJ on the other hand was proud his son was fighting for his Country like so many Patriots that went before him in the Williams Family.  He also thought the Navy might straighten his wild card son up a bit.

Preston would return from WWl, with Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome.  Here he is with his little sister Eva on the left, Frances Allen, Tom Lyle Williams Noel James Williams and Bennie Gibbs.

Tom Lyle enlisted as well but was denyed service because he was the sole supporter of his entire family according to his draft card in 1917.  Noel was married to Frances and also supported the family managing the Maybelline Company. He might have been too old for service at the time.

Maybelline deeply impacted everything from legendary Hollywood movie stars to every day working people's lives throughout so many generations.

Sharrie Williams, author of the Maybelline Story has written a really wonderful book!  Its an amazing story of once upon a time in America, where great desire, ambition and dreams overcome great adversity and obstacles. There is spirit, triumph mixed with tragedy as a company grows from nothing to world prominence in its industry. Written in an engaging, personal way so that as you read it, you are drawn in, and feel like you are right there with the family.

Maybelline (both the products and the story) interacted and evolved through the major cultural and  dynamic historic events in American history and deeply it impacted everything from legendary Hollywood movie stars to every day working people's lives throughout so many generations. And there is an eternal verity that comes through as a constant theme: when you make a woman feel beautiful, there is a profound effect on everyone around her.

You tell the story in a compelling way that makes it come alive, and also creates new stories that grow naturally from the main one."

Larry Crandell, Santa Barbara California.

The Maybelline Story reads like the best fiction but with real characters and plots that take us on an American dream wild ride.

From the Midwest through Chicago and Hollywood, we follow a path strewn with scandals, jealousies, triangles and betrayals. Throw in arson, a still-unsolved murder and even the Feds and Mafia and you have an exciting and bumpy journey that leaves more than one casualty in its wake. And Maybelline was along for the ride.

The characters seem larger-than-life yet somehow remain vulnerable and sympathetic This is a family that continually grasped at the shiny ring only to discover that it might be no more than their own reflections staring back, sometimes accusingly, in the mirror.

The legacy is in good hands with Ms. Williams. She's a true storyteller and writes with passion and candor while bluntly sharing her own resolve to rise above her

family's lifelong mantra of money, beauty and the search for perfection. It's a critical but tender tale of redemption that displays an understanding, compassion and love for her family. She never gave up on her dream to tell this story and literally braved fire and fury to share it with the world. It's a book that you really can't put down, a true page-turner and I couldn't wait to find out what happened next.

You'll never look at a Maybelline ad again without feeling a tug of empathy for these characters and the struggles and determination of one man's effort to capture beauty on a brush and change forever the color palette of the world.      Amazon.com

I enjoyed this book so much. I am a sucker for how items came to be, how they were marketed and
how they survive in changing times. I also love beauty, so how could this miss? (Well, it could if
another book of the same type is any indication...) While I know there are said to be three sides to
every story, and in the middle lies the truth, I think the author did a wonderful job of bringing her
family (warts...lots of them...and all) to life. I especially loved the parts about the history of
Maybelline and the heart that was put into the products. This is the story of hard work, how family
can help you, hurt you, or both. I loved the photos and the website Sherrie has. But, don't just rely
on the site...there is a BIG story told here...you won't be sorry.

Fascinating story about a company I have supported since my teens. The product development, the love, the loss and the family drama creates a page turner.

I accidentally came across this book when I was searching though biographies and the synopsis
drew me towards it. It is wonderfully written and is keep u hooked wanting to know more about what they did next.
Until this book, Maybelline was just a name for me now I feel like I am a part of their history.
A great inspirational read of how an accidental idea became a worldwide phenomenon. I would
have liked more pictures included in the book.

I absolutely loved this book. The most entertaining book I have read in a long time and was never
bored which is rare for me. A wonderful look into the amazing lives of the rich and their journey from
beginning to end. I enjoyed every minute of this book and think you will too. It was like watching a
soap opera except it was all real.

Highly recommend this book. It is an easy read primarily about the sister-in-law of the founder of the
cosmetic company. I would have enjoyed reading more about the founding of the Maybellne
Company and how it conquered the cosmetic industry. However, this book provides a rudimentary
outline of their fabulous success and fortunes amassed. The story of Evelyn Williams is spellbinding
and reads like a novel. This is a must read on the consequences of too much money and how it
affects a family from Kentucky.

I like to read real history and being an entrepreneur myself I found this so close to home. You have
all and lose it, have it again and lose it, but win at the end. The win does not come without the family
dynamics and issues that face the every day family. An interesting read, but so many good lessons
to be taken from the advice and knowledge of Lyle.
