Maybelline founder Tom Lyle Williams

Memorial to the Maybelline Family Veterans who fought for their Country during WWl and WWll.

Today I honor the men in my family who served in the Armed Forces and fought in WW1 and WW11.

Maybelline family Veteran William Preston Williams, WW1.

This Memorial Day marked the 5TH anniversary of my father's death and brought to mind the War Heroes in the Maybelline Family.  Here are a few pictures of my grandfather Williams Preston Williams as he prepared to leave his home and family and fight for our Country during World War l.
This is what Chicago looked like when my grandfather William Preston Williams joined the Navy in 1917.  He was just 18 years old with visions of being a War Hero.  Like so many boy's from the Lost Generation he imagined the war would quickly end and he'd return unscathed by the ravages of battle - only to be greatly disillusioned with a broken spirit.

This is what was going on in the Maybelline Family at the same time.  Tom Lyle introduced Maybelline to the public as Silent Film became popular and Silent Film Stars were seen on screen with heavily made up eyes.
Theda Bara "THE VAMP" - 1917.  This is what was going on in Hollywood when WW1 broke out.  Women began to be conscious of the their eyes and buy Maybelline.  An interesting fact -  Maybelline was sent in an unmarked package insuring the buyer her privacy since Maybelline was so frowned upon at the time.

1917 Maybelline became available through mail order.

Screen from the Silent Film WINGS.  This is what Preston was heading into.  He was a rear gunner on one of those Flying Sticks in the sky.

Preston with his parents Susan and TJ.  His mother was grief stricken after already losing her first son, Pearl to TB and the thought of losing another son to War was too much for her.  TJ on the other hand was proud his son was fighting for his Country like so many Patriots that went before him in the Williams Family.  He also thought the Navy might straighten his wild card son up a bit.

Preston was leaving his family to go fight the enemy, an enemy he and so many young American boys thought would be easy to destroy.  It was far from easy, and Preston came home with Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, never to be the same again.  Here he is with his little sister Eva on the left, Frances Allen, Tom Lyle Williams Noel James Williams and Bennie Gibbs.

Mabel Williams on the left with her brother Preston, Helen, one of the first Maybelline models, Frances Allen Williams, Bennie Gibbs and Tom Lyle Williams in front of his new "PAGE "Convertible in Chicago.

Tom Lyle enlisted as well but was denyed service because he was the sole supporter of his entire family according to his draft card in 1917.  Noel was married to Frances and also supported the family managing the Maybelline Company. He might have been too old for service at the time.

Maybelline founder, Tom Lyle Williams, niece's Annette Williams and Jane Allen visited the Villa Valentino in June of 1940, and Jane kept a diary of their unbelievable adventures. Here is a portion of the diary I posted in my Maybelline Memories column for NICHE magazine.  Open the magazine to see my lovely article in print.

Saturday, June 15, 1940.

Slept until noon as usual. Decided to go to the Hollywood Turf Club and the races. We spent a long time looking for the track. When we finally there the second race had been run. Started losing our money. Arnold and Annette were luckier then the rest of us, winning a small amount. Tom Lyle and I didn't do so well. Of course, he lost more than I did. Tom Lyle bet $10.00 on a horse named Woof Woof, because the name reminded him of himself. It was great fun watching the horses run and I do believe the park was the most beautiful race track I have ever seen. All the buildings are new and modern. Saw Ray Milland, Eugene Palette and Den Carpenter. We drove back home in time for dinner. After dinner we saw “Meet The People,” This is one of the cleverest reviews I have ever attended. The impersonations, especially the one of Katherine Hepburn and the ones of Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt were good. After the show we went t Sardi's for a drink. Played cards after we got home. Just don't seem to go to bed early at all. Emery has had very little time to spare, but is usually home when we get in, so we either talk a while or play a game of cards.

Sunday June 16, 1940

George took Annette and me to Church, as Tom Lyle had a cold and didn't feel so well. After Church, Emery, Arnold, Annette and I had breakfast. Tom Lyle hadn't come down, so we let him rest. Annette, Arnold and I took a walk over to the Hollywood Bowl, a short distance from the Villa Valentino. The Bowl is set in the mountains. Quite a climb, but we were glad to see it and all the scenery around. Concerts, Operas, etc. are held here.

Tom Lyle was up when we returned, so we picked up Evelyn and took a ride to see the ocean and and on to Malibu Beach. On the way we stopped to see the Japanese Gardens. The flowers were perfectly beautiful and such an array of color. The ride out was grand and the scenery is indescribable it is so wonderful. I expected to see miles and miles of sand before we finally reached the beaches, but the mountains run almost to the waters edge. The drive follows the ocean with mountains on the other side. All along the ocean are brach homes, many belonging to movie people. Marion Davies has what you would almost consider a mansion with large servants homes. Tom Lyle showed us the two beach homes he occupied while at Malibu.

After seeing the scenery we went over to the Malibu Inn for a bit to eat. We saw John Howard on the way to the Inn. Funny thing happened. We girls started to the rest room, had just gotten inside when Tom Lyle came to the door calling my name. We couldn't imagine what had happened, but discovered we had entered the wrong room and we ere in the men's room. We were embarrassed and boy did everyone in the place roar, including John Howard. We saw John Carroll on the drive back, after chasing him for miles trying to figure out just whom he was. We rode up to the top of the mountain to get a view of the Hollywood city lights at night. Looked like a million little stars from such height and the moon overhead was almost full. Such scenery I have never seen. Had time for a game of cards when we got back to the Villa Valentino.

Imagine driving around Hollywood in in Tom Lyle Williams, 1940 Packard Victoria.

Maybelline New York "Please bring back Ultra Big Ultra Lash Waterproof Mascara" says my Guest Blogger Deborah Oxley

Deborah OxleySharrie Williams

However, I was unable to post a comment so I am doing it here in almost desperation. I am 56 years old and have spent a large not small fortune on trying new mascaras since Maybelline discontinued "Ultra Big Ultra Lash Waterproof Mascara." I have long straight lashes so they have to be curled.

This was the ONLY mascara I have EVER had that.......did not wilt my curl; did not even wilt in the shower if I put a wash cloth over my eyes; it even would look better on day two or three due to being able to add another layer; was not brittle; did not flake or smudge; had a wonderful conditioner in it; the brush was the bomb; I got so many compliments on my lashes; mostly asking if they were false, but they were not...just great mascara.

I cannot say enough great things about that mascara and was shocked when it was taken off the market, especially when I started trying other mascaras. I used to love my eyes and got some many compliments. Not any more. I wrote Maybelline about a year or so after it was discontinued and got no response. Please! What can I do to help bring this mascara back on the market. It is selling on a well known site for $75 a tube. I don't know how many they have in stock and it HAS to be old even though never opened. I just can't justify spending that much money on something I loved so much and then not being able to get it again.

Seriously, Maybelline needs to wake up and listen to everyday women. Have you seen the mascara brushes all brands are pushing on us these days. Way, way too big around. And don't even get me started on the actual product. Waste of money. I bought 3 more different brands just yesterday and threw all three away this morning when getting ready for work. So frustrated! Can you help? Thanks for your time and reading my story.

Comments from ladies wishing Maybelline New York would bring back Big Ultra Lash Mascara!!!

ULTRA BIG ULTRA LASH UPDATE FOR ALL THOSE WISHING TO HAVE IT BACK..I finally found the Ultra Big Ultra Lash Mascara on Ebay and paid $29.99 for it. It is the ONLY mascara that keeps my lashes curled and soft. Maybelline Great Lash is awful, I makes lashes hard and brittle and does not keep the curl! I called Maybelline after receiving my Ultra Big Ultra Lash because my lashes now look like they did when I was 25 because of this mascara. WHY did Maybelline discontinue??? WHY?? PLEASE bring it back! It's selling for $50.00 to $75.00 per tube on the Internet! PLEASE! Pamela. MAYBELLINE ULTRA BIG ULTRA LASH MASCARA

Helen Tanguay February 19, 2013 6:20 pm I agree with all lovers of this mascara. I have used it as well, since my teen years and never had need to give it up till it was sadly discontinued. It was the best ever mascara of all time for me. Went on perfectly with no globs or clumps...smoothly, evenly, naturally and it kept the curl. It lengthened beautifully as well. I received so many compliments way back when, on my eyelashes. The brush was the best design ever. I HATE those big fat brushes out there that don't allow any control whatsoever. I have never been happy with any mascara since, (and I have been searching for over 20 years. PLEASE bring it back! on MAYBELLINE ULTRA BIG ULTRA LASH MASCARA

I was more than disappointed when I was unable to find this mascara. I was just telling my 3 daughters this morning, on the way to school and they were apply mascara, talking about their new mascaras. Yes, they all use something different and have their favorites. Well be the stay at home mom with no makeup on, yet, I had to chime in on the fact that there's not a mascara in the world that could touch UBUL! I have used it since I started wearing makeup and when they stopped making it, I went to every store buying up all they had. For over 10 years now I have tried every brand and every brands type! Still to this day 1/20/2013 NO SUCCESS! Now the girls are like "mom, try to see if they have repackaged it under a different name, you know Google it". So I did and came across this site. PLEASE tell me they will bring this back or sell the recipe for it to a brand that will! Robin Pierce, Atlanta GA on MAYBELLINE ULTRA BIG ULTRA LASH MASCARA I truly feel as if your email today was heaven sent! Unfortunately, they are out of stock at the moment and I am anxiously waiting their reply. Thank you so much for taking the time to refer their website to me. PS - just came home from shopping and the fresh peaches were on sail. I am going to try your Aunt Mabel's recipe for peach cobbler. I saw a video link for you actually making it and it looked delish! You made my day twice today, thank you.

I'm thinking of doing a poll here on the Maybelline Book Blog to see if enough people would like me to petition Maybelline New York to bring back "Ultra Big Ultra Lash Mascara"  leave me a comment below if you want it back.

40 year reunion with my old boyfriend, sparks memories of the sale of the Maybelline Company in 1967

I had a 40 year reunion with my long time boyfriend, Al Hall, recently and it sparked many memories from our time together in the late 1960's.....After the Maybelline Company sold in December of 1967, my great uncle, Tom Lyle Williams, Lawyer, insisted we all move on to greener pastures and that my sister Donna and I find more suitable future husbands.  Al was the lead singer and bass guitar player in a band called the U.S. Males at the time and played at the most popular dance spot in Westwood Village, near UCLA in the heart of Los Angeles.  At 19, it was the best place in town to hang out, because you only had to be 18 to get in.   So, for several years I could be seen dancing at "Mom's" until 2:00  while Al played, most every night.  However, once my parents moved to Newport Beach in 1969, my life changed radically and Al and I parted.  The most amazing thing is, Al, eventually stopped playing in Beer Bars and enjoyed a very successful sales career in the Electronics Industry.  So, you just never know what the future will bring  when you're still so young.

Excerpt from my book, The Maybelline Stoy

As my parents started building their big house on the bay, with a fifty-foot yacht already parked at the dock, my sister Donna and I struggled with the suggestion of Tom Lyle's lawyer, Mr. Spindell, that we stay conservative "like the Nixon girls."  Apparently, this meant we should get rid of our going-nowhere boyfriends.  Mr. Spindell said we needed to bring professionals into the family; finding a doctor, lawyer or businessman was the only way to go.

Here I am with Al Hall, on one of our first dates.  I met him at a dance place, called the RF Club, in Los Angeles, January 1967 and we were together until 19 January 1971.

While my great uncle, Tom Lyle Williams, was negotiating the sale of the Maybellne Company in 1967..... which can only be described as..... "the calm before the storm,"..... there was a special guy in my life, who helped me survive the changes, in one piece, while having fun, fun, fun.....
