The Beauty of Coupling Permanent Makeup and Traditional Makeup: It All Started With A Mascara

I remember, as a little girl, watching my mother get dolled up at her vanity each day. I would watch her as the beautiful bright lights surrounded her mirror and dream of the day I would be allowed to do my own makeup. I remember her giving me my very first Maybelline mascara; I must have been 13 years old. With excitement, I brought it with me everywhere I went. After that, I knew I had a love for all things beauty: makeup, hair, fashion, etc. Many years later I found what I was truly born to do: cosmetic tattooing and permanent makeup. If I had known then that I would be in the field that I am in now, I would have started my career a long time ago. I did not know that little mascara would open the door to something bigger and greater than myself. I naturally enhance my clients beauty rather than replace it. Coupling permanent makeup and traditional makeup makes daily life so much easier for all women, including those on the go, mature women, corporate women and everyone else in between. It's not only about the girly stuff; I have many male clients as well. Cosmetic tattooing can really make a man look 10 years younger.

It's amazing how shaping someone's lips and using a pigment that exactly matches their natural lip color can be an easy guide for women to apply their lipstick or lip liner. I can't express how many women can't wait to purchase a wardrobe of lipstick colors to apply to their newly shaped mouth after their permanent makeup procedure. I love how tattooing someones eyelash line with a fine line can open their eyes and give the illusion that theirs eyes are bigger, brighter and younger looking. Adding a touch of mascara afterwards is like the icing on the cake. Sadly, many women experience the occasional "oops! I smeared my eyebrow off!" But that never happens when they are artistically done with permanent makeup. I have had makeup artists tell me that they love when their clients have permanent makeup because their clients already have an eyebrow guideline to work with. Instead, they can spend their time on the fun things like contouring, eyeshadow, fake lashes, blush and a luscious lip color.

Cosmetic tattooing and permanent makeup have been around since the days of Cleopatra. It is an art that is has been around for thousands of years. Makeup itself has been used since practically the beginning of time. Coupling traditional makeup with any permanent makeup procedure is not necessary for every errand or outing that we do; however, not worrying if your lip shape is perfect or your eyebrows are even is a huge relief. I love makeup! While I do have my eyebrows, eyeliner and lips tattooed, I wear makeup every day to make dramatize my eyes or make my lips shiny. But, if my lipstick wears off... it's okay! It's crazy to think that the amazing career that I have started with something so small in size yet it was so powerful. It started with a Maybelline mascara.

March 2, 1964, Monday, Told everyone I'm going with Howard. Ugly windy day.
Drove to school. It rained last night. It was so windy my hair blew apart as soon as I got out of the car. Latest news is Cindy W. is pregnant. She goes down with every boy she goes out with. She's only known the boy for three weeks. After school took Marilyn to get a job at Newberry's. She didn't get it. Then went to Fosters. Went home and fell asleep until 6:30. Than Daddy was on the phone with Nana until 7:00. I was so mad. I wrote the letter to Unk Ile, about what my friends think about Maybelline liquid Eyeliner . Sending it tomorrow. Howard called at 8:30. I talked about using Lou's band for the Saffron Dance. I sure hope we use them. Also he wants me to fix Phil up with someone. Howard get his license in 3 weeks.

Fun, youth and sex appeal are key features in 1964 and Jean Shrimpton, with Black Eyeliner and Pale Pink Lipstick, had the look we all wanted in 1964.

My Guest Blogger Gwen Eve Lewis shares Vintage Makeup Tips and Tricks To Use Now

Contact Gwen by email, gwenevelewis@gmail.com, or jux, gwenevelewis.jux.com.

With modern technology, ingredients, trends and sensibilities, sometimes the beauty tips handed down to us from our mothers and grandmothers seem dated and useless. Why follow the old methods of skincare and makeup application when modern tips seem so much more in sync with what’s currently accepted as “correct” and “true.” However, remember that at one point in the past, those same tips were considered cutting-edge and absolutely on-trend. So, don’t be so quick to ignore beauty secrets from the past. There are plenty of gems amongst those old-fashioned tips that still work now. In fact, many of these tips are less expensive ways to achieve the same look with more expensive products and instruments. Incorporate them into your modern beauty routine for the best of both worlds.

Makeup
  • Classic Red Lipstick -If you’re bored with your current style, shake things up with a bold red lip (unless that is already your go-to look). Seen on so many Old Hollywood stars, the eye-catching look is bound to instantly make you feel more glamorous. To pick out the perfect shade for your skin, first find out if you have cool, neutral or warm undertones. Hint: Red lipstick with a bluish undertone will make your teeth look whiter and your smile more dazzling.
  • Keep Your Lashes Curled -
To keep the curl in your lashes longer, heat up your eyelash curler with a quick blast from your hair dryer. The heated metal will help curl your lashes more effectively (in the same way curling irons work). Just make sure you check it against your finger before applying it to your eyelashes—you don’t want to accidentally burn your eye! Then swipe on a layer of your favorite mascara, like Maybelline Great Lash, which has been the favorite of makeup artists for years.
  • Keep Eyeshadow Inplace -
Run out of eyeshadow primer? Swipe on a very thin layer of petroleum jelly instead to help hold the powder in place. Make sure it’s a very thin layer—you don’t want it to be lumpy and gloppy.
  • Combat Shine-
We’re all dependent on blotting paper to fresh up our makeup throughout the day. An old-fashioned stand-in for modern blotting papers is tissue paper! Blot away excess oil with a tissue paper the next time you find yourself without powder or blotters.
Skin
If you don’t want to invest in fancy eye makeup removers, and regular cleansers aren’t getting rid of the mascara, liner, and eyeshadow, try baby oil. Your mother and your grandmother used it for good reason: gentle, inexpensive, and easy-to-find, baby oil is a very effective eye makeup remover.
Here’s an oldie-but-goodie:
if you have puffy eyes from a late night out with the girls, or a late one in with your favorite tearjerker, put slices of cucumber, drained tea bags, or chilled teaspoons on your eyes to help bring down the swelling.
While you can’t close up your pores (they don’t open and close), you can help make your skin look tighter with a quick splash of cold water after you finish washing your face. The cold water improves circulation to the skin, which can also help bring about a slight glow.
Nails
Whether you’re playing the role of a secretary in a private dick film noir moment, or just giving yourself a manicure, make sure you file your nails all in one direction. The back-and-forth sawing motion will cause the nail to split more easily.
If your nails are yellowed from prolong nail polish wear, soak them in lemon juice and water in between manicures to clear them right up.
When all else fails, don a pair of enormous sunglasses to hide tired eyes and add a bit of mystery and glamour to your look. There’s a reason celebrities still use this trick!
These tips, while old-fashioned, are still effective and often less expensive than a pile of beauty products and tools. Shake up your look and inject a little bit of old-school glamour into your daily routine with these retro beauty tricks.

Thank you Gwen for these wonderful retro-beauty tricks. Maybelline started out as a beauty-trick in 1915, when Mabel Williams, mixed ash and Vaseline together and applied it to her lashes and brows. Her brother, Tom Lyle Williams ran wih the idea and formed the first cake mascara, called Maybelline in her honor. Hope you read all about it in my book, The Maybelline Story.

Bette Davis and Leslie Ann Down with Hollywood Borderline Producer, David Van Houten

We ran across this photo in the Borderline Hollywood archive from September 1978 of David Van Houten meeting Bette Davis.

The great Bette Davis stopped by the 29th floor Publicity Office of Paramount Pictures in New York City with a bottle of Scotch, to just thank us for helping her promote Death on the Nile, which was released theatrically September 29, 1978. What an amazing and thoughtful person she was.

Van Houten's mother, who's name was also Bette, happened to be in New York that day and ran over from her hotel, The Essex House, to meet her as well.

Dr. David Van Houten with actress Leslie Anne Down.

He remembers her as Georgina, in the English television series from 1975, UP STAIRS, DOWN STAIRS...."Such an amazing television series from that period"  he said, "and she was amazing in it.   She's still an iconic beauty today."

The changing styles of young women was captured accurately in the brilliant 1970′s TV period drama – Upstairs Downstairs, where the young Georgina, wonderfully portrayed by Lesley-Anne Down, evolved from war nurse to frivolous flapper.
