Athena Karsant interviews Sharrie Williams...Karsant is an internationally renowned master cosmetic, corrective and paramedical tatoo specialist

Guest Blogger: Sharrie Williams author of The Maybelline Story and the Spirited Family Dynasty Behind It.

Sharrie Williams
I am so very excited and honored to have my second guest blogger (the first was my daughter Krysten)! Sharrie Williams is the author of The Maybelline Story. She is the heir to the Maybelline legacy, is Tom Lyle William's great-niece and the granddaughter of Evelyn Boecher Williams. I am so excited to have the beautiful and wonderful Sharrie on my blog this week and I know you will enjoy every word below - I surely did!

As a blogger yourself, what advice can you give others and myself about the blogging world?

I find it incredible how a blog grows organically just by showing up at the computer everyday and posting good material.  Three years ago I was excited to receive 66 hits my first month.  Now I can't believe I have over 35,000 hits a month.   Of course adding Twitter followers has been a big boost and Facebook expanded my online presence as well.

Like Mabel in the book that burnt off her eyelashes on a hot stove, can you share some of your makeup secrets?

After I finish putting on my eye shadow I dab the tiniest bit of eye cream on my lids. This is an old Hollywood Movie Star secret I learned from my grandmother.  Another favorite trick of mine is, once I have my face make up and powder on, I buff it with a terrycloth washrag so it doesn't look thick and dull.  I also blot the oil during the day with rice paper or sometimes even a piece of a toilet seat cover in a public restroom.  Try it you'll be amazed.

What is your must have Maybelline product?

I still use Great Lash mascara. The number one mascara in the world and I like Maybelline mineral Power make-up. (It looks great after being buffed.)

What inspired you to write this book?

Maybelline Heir, Chuck Williams - BB1 - Has a Passion for fashion when it comes to his Factory 5 Cobra

Charles Allen Williams, aka Chuck - BB1..... with two of the cars from his personal collection. Chuck, like his great-uncle, Tom Lyle Williams, carries on the tradition of collecting EYE CATCHING Automobiles.

Chuck's great uncle, Tom Lyle Williams, with his 1934 Packard.  Tom Lyle worked for several years to save enough money to buy his first car in 1917. The Paige, called the most beautiful car in the world, ignited Tom Lyle's passion for custom cars.

Maybelline Family History, Tom Lyle's Charismatic Brother In Law, Chester Haines had a Passion for Automobiles

Tom Lyle's litter sister, Eva Williams, married Chester Haines, in 1924 and he worked for The Maybelline Company for over 40 years.

Love Birds, Eva and Ches, at Tom Lyle's Summer cabin, in 1923.
Like all the men in my family, Ches Haines loved beautifully crafted automobiles.  Perhaps that's why Tom Lyle - a car enthusiast himself - put Ches in charge of Maybelline's transportation department - as soon as he and Eva were married of course!!

Ches was in charge of  transporting cases of Maybelline to post office and dime stores around Chicago.

Chester Haines with his brand new 1930 Pontiac Sedan.
Chester Haines, not only had an affinity for beautiful automobiles, he had a killer sense of humor and a singing voice that could charm bird's right out the tree.  In fact, his voice was so smooth, bet, if circumstances were different, he might have landed a recording contract as a crooner.

Be sure to listen to Ches Haines, sing "Maybe," and "Your Beautiful Eye's" on the record he made in 1947, with his brother in law, Tom Lyle Williams and Harold W. Ragland, Maybelline's marketing executive - as well as Eva and the rest of the Williams family.

Why Women need to spend more time applying eye creams and paying attention to the skin under their eyes.

Nothing shouts Fashion like Beautiful wrinkle free Eyes.

Maybelline introduced an Eye Cream in 1955, but, because women were unaware of the importance of protecting  the delecate tissue around their eyes, the product didn't to well and was discontinued.

Pauline Williams, 1955.
My mother, started using Maybelline eye cream when I was 8 years old and I have been using eye cream  since I was 16.

If you don't use eye cream it's never too early or too late to begin protecting the soft tissue around your eyes.  Remember, beautiful eyes are the most important feature on your beautiful face.

I have very sensitive eye's that itch, burn and get red with most Eye Creams.  I found that Shiseido Benefiance Wrinkle Resist 24 Intensive Eye Contour Cream works well for me.

Here is what made my Father's Casa de Guillermo, the most beautiful estate in Palm Springs

The entire hardscape of the Estate was covered in thousands of  Mexican Pavers.

Creating a Romantic 1930's Atmosphere the moment you drove through the electric gates.

The only problem was the expensive maintenance over the 30 years he owned Casa de Guillermo.

I bet if my Father had the chance to do it over, he'd have used Travertine Pavers. Take a look at the benefits for yourself.

The Benefits of Travertine Pavers Infographic

If you’re looking for a new flooring option for your home or a new type of paver for your outdoor patio, driveway or pool deck, travertine is one choice you should surely consider. It’s a 100% natural earth product that is formed when water passes through limestone, depositing calcium and releasing carbon dioxide. Travertine pavers have a variety of benefits making them ideal for pool decks. Here is an infographic explaining why you may want to install travertine flooring in your home.
It’s Long Lasting
If you need proof of how long travertine can stay gorgeous and hold up to daily wear and tear, just ask the Romans. Many of their construction projects, most notably the Colosseum, were made out of travertine and are still magnificent architectural features today.
It Has a Non-Slip Surface
Other types of pavers can be slippery when they’re wet, which can be problematic around pool areas. Travertine, however, has a porous texture, which provides a naturally non-slip surface. This makes travertine pavers an ideal choice for pool decks and patios.
It’s Heat Resistant
There’s nothing worse than scorching hot pavers when you’re walking around your yard or patio barefoot. But travertine pavers don’t get hot, so your feet will stay cool no matter how high the mercury climbs.
It’s Easy to Install Yourself
If you’re the DIY type, you’ll love how simple it is to install travertine pavers. Pavers can either be wet-set over an existing solid surface like concrete or dry-set using sand over gravel or lime rock. Travertine paver installation is easy. Next time you’re ready to jump into a home makeover, ask yourself if travertine can get the job done. Chances are, it can!

Gloria Swanson, Erte', Lash-Brow-Ine and Maybelline kick of the 1920's

Happy New Year and hoping for a Big Year for all in 2014

Between 1915–1937, Erte designed over 200 covers for Harper's Bazaar, and his illustrations appear in such publications, as Illustrated London News, Cosmopolitan, Ladies' Home Journal and Vogue.  Lash-Brow-Ine and Maybelline, first appeared in these magazines at the same time.

Erte's delicate figures and sophisticated, glamorous designs are instantly recognizable, and his ideas and art still influence fashion into the 21st century. His costumes, program designs and theatrical production sets were featured in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1923.

Tom Lyle Williams also captured the spirit of Art Deco, in his exquisite, Lash-Brow-Ine, and Maybelline Ads in the 1920's. This one features Gloria Swanson, the Queen of Silent Films.

Lash-Brow-Ine

Renamed Maybelline in 1917

Erte' - Ziegfield Follies, Maybelline in the 1920's.

"Through these portals pass the most beautiful girls in the world."

Ziegfield, 1920s nudes, considered fine art today..

While some deem Maybelline, "The Provence of Whores,"  Erte' and Ziegfeld make it mainstream.

Maybelline Vintage Fashion Diva, Evelyn Williams - WHAT PRICE HOLLYWOOD

There was no one in the Maybelline family more

invincible than Evelyn Williams...at least that's what she wanted us all to believe.

With the same voratious appetite Evelyn had for succeeding in all areas of her life, including playing the violin, mastering the stage as a ballerina and finally securing a position within the Maybelline family, she focused on her only child William Preston Williams Jr. (Bill.)

Evelyn wasn't your ordinary sweet homemaker, though she did love her son as ferociously as a mother Lion loves her cub, however her main objective was to instill a mindset for survival in the boy and that meant creating an indisputable bond between Bill and his uncle Tom Lyle Williams.

She succeeded, though not  without making herself unpopular with the rest of the Williams family.  Evelyn fought on the battlefield of life in her pursuit to win at all costs and today I realize my remarkable grandmother, the original auntie Mame, was two generations ahead of her time.

A tiny 5' 2" powerhouse with boundless energy, Machiavellian mental machinations and the ability to outsmart the smartest of wild cats, she had one desire.  To place her clan at the top of the heap no matter what the price and Evelyn paid the highest price of all... with her life!

Nana was a diva in every respect and not only expected but demanded I follow in her footsteps. I wonder if she'd be pleased today with the fact I've dedicated my life to her memory and the family she loved so much.

Christmas Memories from 1959 and 1960 at my Childhood Home in Culver City California

Here are some of my special Christmas memories.

My sister Donna, Billee and me in the Surrey.

My mother, Pauline was pregnant that Christmas and after three girls we were thrilled to have Baby Preston join our family the next Christmas in 1960.

William Preston Williams lll made our family complete and was the best gift of all on Christmas 1960.

Sharrie, Donna, Billee and Baby Preston

We moved into our home on Lenawee in Culver City in 1956, the year it was built and uncle Lyle spent every Christmas with us here, through 1967, the year he sold the Maybelline Company.

We moved to Newport Beach in 1969 and sold the house on Lenawee in 1971.  Today, 56 years later it's still the cutest house on the block and carries all the special memories of Christmas our childhood and the happiest years of our lives.

left to right, Sharrie, Bill, Tom Lyle, Billee, Pauline, Donna and Nana, Evelyn Williams and our little poodle, Pepsi.
Unk Ile's last Christmas with us in 1967.  He had just sold the Maybelline Company to Plough Inc. and our lives were about to change forever.

Merry Christmas everyone and thank you for following the Maybelline Book Blog all year...

Vintage 1952 Christmas Card from the Maybelline Company and Tom Lyle Williams

Merry Christmas to all my friends around the World.

Tom Lyle Williams was Unk Ile to the family and never failed to remember every single one of his siblings, their children and their children's children on Christmas.  My sisters, brother and I, and all our cousins couldn't wait for our shiny $10.00 bill inside a money-card, that said Merry Christmas, Lots of love from Unk Ile.
